New car, some questions!

Hey all,

Just picked this up about two months ago.

Needless to say I love it. It corners like a rabbit on crack. :D

I get my speed fix from my 700hp z06 normally, but this car is still pretty slow and I understand you can improve the P/W pretty easily with certain mods. At the same time, I dont want two project cars.

I was thinking an ALTA 19% pulley and an MTH tune, maybe a CAI?

Whaddya think? Will I get good power out of the car, and will it stay reliable? It wont be seeing the track, and primary use is commuting/runabout stuff.

And who sells these items? I saw the pulley on ebay for $100, is that as good as it gets? And is it really a PITA to put in? Anyone in socal do this stuff professionally?

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to NAM. Nice MINI. I hope you won't be disappointed that the MINI was not designed for power. Delve into the technical forum archives and you will find many, many threads on performance modifications. You might even want to contact a couple of NAM sponsors who would probably be pleased to fill you in on what is available and what they have done to their own cars. What's a Z06?

Welcome to the wacky world of MINI obsession

...Definately do a 15% pulley, (19% will probably require you to want to put in larger injectors) K&N Typhoon CAI, some type of 'cat-back' exhaust, and you might also want to consider an ECU software upgrade... I went with GIAC's.

Don't know what your budget is, but if you have $1,500 - $2,000 to spend you should be able to get the MINI close to 200 hp and that will seem plenty fast.... You won't be able to beat a Z06 'vette on the straights, but will give it a run for the money in the twisties.

Definately consider some suspension upgrades as well, like a rear swaybar and lower control arms. When I put my rear sway bar in, it was like night and day.

Have fun! - - m

Oz, Welcome to the maniacal world of MINIs....I have to ask, and please don't take me wrong because I know it can be fun to tweak the machine, but....If you're not going to be racing it, why mess with it? Okay, so I honestly don't understand all the gadgets, but what's the point of modifying it if you're just going to commute? If you're not going to be swapping pinks or otherwise racing it, then I'd concentrate on tricking it out in other ways with the visible accessories and audio...Mick

Mick, Im a power crazed maniac. I dont want to over mod the car because its still fwd and Ive been down the high hp fwd road before. Visual stuff has zero appeal to me, as does audio, since Ive done that before too. I simply want a little more oomph out of the car.

Im located in Thousand Oaks, btw, work in Encino.

Oz

What is a Z06? Heres mine. Its a type of corvette.

pakisho,
just my $0.02, but from what i know, going to a 19% pulley won't do you any better than a 15% pulley. With all increased supercharger performance, you'll want to do intake, exhaust, injectors, chip, etc... but as I think Randy Webb would tell you, there is a sweet spot where increased supercharger compression (which increases as you decrease the pulley size) is optimum. going beyond 15% to 19% will just generate additonal heat that offsets the gain in compression. Randy explains this at all of his pulley parties and also does a really good explaination on one of the whiteroofradio podcasts...

a good place to look: www.webbmotorsports.com or www.whiteroofradio.com
