I bought a fairly nice 04 MC40 about a week ago. It has a few problems, but nothing major. I have service records that have descriptions of the service, but does not have the detail of exactly what was done. I plan to do the 100,000 mile service very soon. It was nice of Wheeler Dealers to do a fairly detailed show (I know it could be better, but shows what I need I think). of this service. My car seems to be so much like the one on the show. I have a broken drivers side fog light (bottom one). headliner was replaced in mine, but with a black one. It has H&R lowering springs (I also got the original springs with the buy). I have regular S rims on mine, but also got the MC40 rims with a little curb rash. I think they can be easily reconditioned, and I need one center cap.. The Oil temp gauge does not work. I need to look into the drain plug sensor. I have not found it available from anywhere, any suggestions on where to look? I would like to eventually replace the winged Mini emblems on the hood and trunk. they are showing their age and would look nice with new one. The leather seats are showing their age. What cleaning/care products are best for them.
Recommendations I have seen say to use Mini synthetic oil. Is this the best option, or are there other good synthetic oils that can be used. If the Mini oil is best, what is a good source. I am sure some of these have been covered in the FAQ's and I will read those shortly (I know I should have before I posted), I just wanted to introduce.
It does not have MC40 stickers, but pretty much all of the other MC40 special stuff is there, including the plaque (#684/1000).
Typically it is cheaper to find a widely available oil that meets all of the same requirements as the MINI oil unless your dealer gives you a nice price. Your search through the NAM FAQs may even turn up who actually makes the MINI oil. (BMW doesn't make their own oil, just the label. =P )
I've long subscribed to the theory below:
1.) Find an oil that meets all the engineering requirements in the service manual.
2.) Consistently use the same oil for top-ups and changes.
3.) Change ~1500 miles before your mechanical sympathy tells you to.
4.) Motor on!
Drain plug sender is available (VDO gauge) on www.summitracing.com. Wheel center caps are available at www.partsgeek.com. You can find all the MC40 decals and door number plates at Firestorm Graphix.
Nice find. we have some of the mc40 stuff left, some of its nla now. Lots of info in this thread,. BTW i just met one of the people whom first worked with MINIUSA on the first builds for this MC40 in the USA.
