New Mini owner as of 2017

Hi all! I purchased a Mini Clubman last fall after MANY years of wanting one and I'm loving every minute of it. I also love the community and the friendliness of other drivers on the road!!

Question regarding paint - after coming out of a store yesterday, I noticed two approx half inch gashes in the paint on the passenger door. I'm thinking a shopping cart made its way into the door. I was NOT happy. There are no dents, but the paint has been removed in two places and rather noticeable. Has anyone had to fix something like this? I don't want a band aid, but rather a permanent fix/repair of where the paint was removed. Would the whole door need to be re-done? Is there a way to patch the spots so it doesn't look like it was patched?

Thanks in advance for any help given!

Diane

It really depends on the color and age of the paint. A good body shop should be able to match and blend it for you. It definitely sounds beyond something you can do with a touch up kit. Things like exposure to sunlight can come into play also. I’ve had both my front and rear bumpers redone and it’s not noticeable and my car spends all it’s time outside in the weather. Ask around. Other “car guys” will have recommendations for a good body shop. I’ve been using my guy since 1998 and have never been disappointed.
Welcome to the Forum by the way. Stick around, and visit often. Lots of good info on here. Plus, there’s no end to the people that will be all too happy to offer advice for mods!

It is odd for paint to come off like that without a dent. What car do you own? How old? Previous repairs on it? How about a picture of it?

Oh, welcome !!

Welcome to NAM.

If there is a ding, it may be that the paint can be buffed out. I had what I thought was a ding with the paint gone but rather when I had a Paintless Dent guy fixing some other dings he noted that it was most likely more smudge than not. He was correct, pulled out the ding and then he buffed the spot back out. He said that BMW top coat is one of the most hard top coats of any cars manufacturer.

Except for black paint. Among detailers BMW's Jet Black has a reputation for being very soft and easy to screw up.

Welcome.

The world is full people without regard for others, smashing cars with shopping-carts and the like.

I use the place to get my touch-up paint if you are willing to try DIY repairs.

https://www.automotivetouchup.com/

I am NOT affiliated with them but I have been very happy with the product line and various media types/sizes available.

Best of luck.

Motor On!

Chipped paint

Thanks to all for your replies! What a great forum!!

Yes, I agree - most people have no regard whatsoever for others' vehicles. I always park away from others and NEVER hit a door when opening mine. But alas, not everyone is like me. I also noticed a new ding - an actual dent this time - on the driver's side passenger door. This probably happened from another door. Not only do I have a little dent, the paint has also chipped away. So now I have three places where the paint has come off - in a span of one week!!!! Really frustrating. I have had many cars in the past that have been dinged by other doors, but never has the paint chipped off!! For those wondering, this is a 2017 clubman - grey with white stripes. I bought it used from the dealership - it was a demo. I'm thinking about calling the dealership and asking if this is common for the paint to chip off so easily!! And see if they have any suggestions or if they can do something about it. I agree - the paint shouldn't chip off that easily!!

Thanks again to all of you!
