2008 mini convertible sidewalk

Hello,
First time mini owner and in desperate need of some advice. I purchased a 08 convertible the trans in stuck in learning mode.By that I mean it has a "x" before each gear. I brought it to a local bmw mech and was told that the transmission module was not communicating with his service tool.
I know hours and money can add up quick so I was wondering if purchasing a new/used module would be a start? I have worked on plenty of cars but this is my first mini. The car is very clean inside and out so I don't mind putting some money into it. the car as 95K on it .
Any help would be much appreciated
Jeff

This is where my lack of knowledge comes into play. If the service tool cannot see the CVT module at least that is what I am being told. There is no way to rest or delete parameters so I can start over.
I knew about the adaptation but thought i would need to reset or delete before starting over

Welcome. I would try by unplugging the CVT computer and battery cable. Then see if it can communicate, otherwise you cannot reset it.

Thinking no power for at least 15 minutes, then reconnect.
