Hello from Barbados

Hi everyone - here is wishing you all good heath and prosperity in 2018. Hello from Barbados. I have recently purchased a 2003 Mini Cooper r50 and it’s really a joy to drive. It needs some work and I’m looking forward to restoring it to mint condition.

Unfortately, the digital displays on both the speedometer and tachometer are not working and I want to know if the speedometer and tachometer from the 2003 r53 Cooper S would work in the regular 2003 r50 Mini Cooper (n/a)?

MF

Welcome to NAM.

On the issues you are having I am pretty sure that unless you pay somebody with some special software to reprogram a speedo and or tach from another car, it will not work as your ECU must "recognize" it.

Have you thought about putting in a HUD that connects to the OBD2 port? I have a convertible and with the top down one cannot see the speed read out on the steering wheel tach (I don't have a dual pod car). You can get a cheap HUD for around $30 here from Ebay. The cheaper ones are more difficult to calibrate and not always accurate across the entire band but in a pinch once you know what the degree of error is, they are not that bad.

Hi and welcome to NAM!
Before you rush into replacing the components, Which will be difficult at best. You need to research what others have done to fix the problem. I could be as simple as disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and hooking it up again, or a reprogramming. trying to use other gauges will be tough!

Hello and welcome, i have been to Barbados and seen some right-hand drive MINIs down there.

The speedo is coded to the car, you would have to get a new one and have the dealership down there code it to your MINI.

I would check why the display is not working and trying checking the battery first then look at the modules. You can swap them but certain lights will stay on and the mileage will be off. If you swap and the display still does not work, I bet something electrical is damaged.

Thank you all. I have already purchased both the speedometer and tachometer used from eBay. I got one with similar mileage and I am awaiting delivery. I was hoping to avoid having to deal with the local dealers here but it seems inevitable since the speedo and tachometer are paired to the vehicle.

Both the speedometer and tachometer actually works but LCD display that shows the mileage and other on board information is blank on both of them.
