tight steering at start up

I've read about steering issues before... I have a 02 mini base. Just at starting there is no immediate power steering. This just started today and any info as to trouble shoots would be a great help. Remember, I'm a carpenter, not a mechanic, so I have eyes, ears and some hands on skill. That's about where it ends.

Might have more luck posting this in the technical area of the forum for your generation MINI, but the power steering pump on the MINI is one of those items that seems to have a bad reputation. In talking to many MINI owners, it seems that this is one of the more common items to fail on the car. This tech article might give you some more good info and also helps you with a step by step process with the replacement if it does indeed end up being your issue. This thread on NAM might have some good info in it as well.

We have a great thread here for the extended warranty from MINI on the P/S pump and the fan.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-steering.html

Have you checked the battery lately, make sure the voltage is up , how old is the battery or the power cable going to the P/S pump ?

If the battery and the cables are fine , it might be the pump on its way out. Before they go, you will have in and out power steering.

Thanks for responses ! Car is at dealership now. Power steering pump and fan were done by previous owner at 85000 km. It's at 100 000 km now. I've only put on 6000 since buying it. Apparently repair work should be 2 year guarantee. Fingers crossed.

Wasn't pump. Driveshaft axle, rear brakes, and while it's there, throw in a premature oil change. Kaching !
