Clutch Life?
Clutch Life?
I'm looking at picking up a Mini with a manual transmission. I am fully aware that clutch life is a very wide variable, but I wondered about an expected life? I don't see too much on this site about clutches and problems, but on the Edmunds.com sire there are quite a few stories about clutches going out quite early in life and several with multiple clutch replacement issues. Those drivers claim to have decades of experience in manual transmissions and yet still have had more than one clutch die in a short time, some as short as 20K miles or so. Are those posts representative of an issue or are they just a gaggle of problems that found their way to the Edmunds.com site? I came out of Miata ownership and there are many clutches there that have made it to 150-200K on original ownership. I'm not a speed shifter although I do drive in a spirited way oftentimes. I know that changing a Mini clutch isn't a cheap job and I am also aware that I'm NOT going to attempt it myself. I gave that sort of labor up a few years ago.
I am currently considering a 110K vehicle that is one owner, although I'm not too sure that it makes any difference.

All comes down to the drivers (other than a few cases of new cars with defect issues).
Driving a stick is a lost art....
And many mini's are driven by folks who are self taught... You do the math.
Pair that with modern habits (like stop and go..lots of clutch use Rather than creeping at one speed)....and things can get $$. Maybe my view on mini relilibilty is colored by my experience.... Butvdriven well, they are great....wailed on, as many posts show, they can be moneypits.

I've never had clutch issues myself and have owned my share of standard transmission vehicles. I understand what you are saying, and am curious about the statistics, ie: the percentage of clutch issues vs the total number out there.
IMO the mini clutches are a bit undersized for the HP of the car...especially when modded (common)...
A clutch on a mini tends to be about $1500-2000 due to labor.... More at dealers, etc...
I all honesty...a clutch is the least of your worries if buying a used mini...justvlikecgas or oil, it is a forsealble expense...something to be budgeted for...
As to numbers lol...
Bet those warrenty numbers are closely guarded secrets....
Let's face it...
90% of folks find forums cause they want to vent cause they have issues....
So sometimes reading threads are interesting... Lots of claims...often threats of legal or deleted bad mouthing if mini does not fix it...
But when the same folks are also bragging of getting a "free" brake job under the 36,000 mile bumpervto bumpers says it all too me.....

Depends on the years you're looking at. The newer R56s definitely seemed to have clutch problems. The JCW uses a different clutch disk and doesn't seem to have the same issue. Do some reading on the forums and you'll see the years people are having issues with.
I've got 101,000 miles on my '04 S and the original clutch is still going strong. I don't drive aggressively very often and a decent percentage of those miles are highway, so the clutch has probably had an easier life than average. I'd ask about how the car has been driven - lots of city driving might mean it's nearing time to change it, but if it had been a highway commuter you could still have a few years left.
While I'm the second owner of my clubman with the first owner logging 30,000km, I had my clutch go out before I hit 45,000km (~30,000 miles). I ordered parts from a mini dealer in the US to save $$$ yet it still cost me close to $2,000 after install at a local shop. The dual mass flywheel on the R56s at least can't be resurfaced.
On a side note its only the second clutch that I've ever had replaced on a car and that was at over 150,000km, and even then it was one of the forks on the pressure plate that snapped (-30 below too). I really believe that the R56 clutch is a poor design.

So 110k miles, and one owner..... Is there a way you can go for a test drive as a passenger of this first owner? Or did the first owner trade it in?
I just thought you could observe the first owners technique maybe.

The vehicle in question is at a lot so the original owner is not available. OTOH, the car is a one owner unit so I feel that I may have an "advantage" although I don't know how much more is left on the clutch. If we could only know that statistic!! At least a visual on brake pads give you an idea. The Carfax and AutoCheck seem pretty straightforward and agree with each other. I'm going to pull the trigger on the car and if I like what I see, I'm in. The rest will be a leap of faith. This site seems to agree that clutch problems, while not unheard of, aren't that frequent. On Edmunds.com you get a completely different feeling. I suppose that on Consumers Reports there will be yet another sense of foreboding!
Of course, the car in question might be sold by the time I make the call which makes this question moot, at least for the moment. (It's a LONG 75 mile drive through the Bronx from Long Island to New Jersey, as anyone living around here can attest to!)
