New owner of mean green mini machine

Hello All,

Well, after being an owner of multiple BMW's I have jumped in to the Mini camp. Initially, I was looking for another clean extreme high mileage e36 M3 when I noticed an ad for a 2005 Mini Cooper S convertible also with extreme high mileage. Well, after some deliberation about the condition and price, I bought it for a KBB Fair price. Now, I am no stranger to BMW issues that arise and have easily been able to resolve most issues inexpensively. The Mini is a completely different beast of which I previously had no knowledge of its complexities and foibles. Some of the issues of the Mini are vert top won't open, coolant leak, cool A/C not frosty cold, and needs brakes and tires. So, what have I gotten myself into? Just found out through the dealer, due to an open recall, that the cassette mechanism does not work and the DVD drive does not work for the navigation. Let's see how this all pans out as I attempt to resolve these issues through cost effective means. Wish me luck!

The cassette mechanism I believe is the plastic housing that runs in center of the convertible top which has a drive motor attached to the cables to pull the top back to the sunroof mode. Anyone else can correct me if I am wrong. I am a newbie.

I figured out that its the coolant expansion tank that leaks and that an online retailer is selling front and rear brake pads at closeout prices for Mini, $49.95 for both! Bought a can of R-134 refrigerant at Walmart and charged the A/C. Now it works with much colder air! Cheap fixes so far. Next up, I will try to burn a copy of the existing DVD for my navigation to see if its not just the disc.

Welcome, I'm also on Bimmerfest. I have several. I love your cheap fix routine! If it works, good. If not, you are not way out of pocket!!

I found a fix for the coolant tank as well on a BMW/Mini vendor site. JB Weld is my friend. Just completed the fix yesterday and it looks ugly but it is on the reservoir as hard as a rock. Hopefully, its completely sealed now.
