370Z to Jeep to... MINI!

Hey all

Just thought I'd throw the obligitory post in the new members area. New to MINIs, but I'm usually pretty active on a number of forums (usually motorcycle-related).

So I had a 2006 Miata for about 4 years, then got bit by the new car fever bug. Traded my Miata for a loaded out 370Z, and then had buyers remose for a couple months. I just loved the Miata, and the 370 was awesome, but a few things just annoyed me. White microfiber doesn't work for the interior of an OCD car guy, and I also just got annoyed at dealing with a 6-speed in traffic for a daily driver. So after 6mo, I traded the Z for something I'm familiar with: a 2010 Wrangler. I knew I'd like it because we had them growing up. But the wife turned out not to like it so much, and I have to admit the engine was pretty gutless considering I was only getting 15mpg. She's liked MINI's for a while, so we went to look at them last week...

And so now I'm waiting to pick up my 2011 Cooper S on wednesday. The Jeep is only 6mo old, but turned out I got a decent enough deal that I didn't get completely hammered on it. So what the heck.

I don't have a pic of it yet, since it was at the port when I made the deal. Since I know threads are useless without pics, here's some pics from my Great Vehicle Identity Crisis of 2010:

Welcome!

Nice selection of cars you've had in a short amount of time. I almost got a 370Z instead of ordering a MCS, always liked them but I think the Mini will be more fun in the long run. Funny thing is the mini will be my 3rd car in a year so I just need 1 more to catch up to you

I did this type of thing with motorcycles, had 4 in 2 years until finally I gave up entirely because my life flashed in front of my eyes on a few close calls

I have had my MCS for about a year now and am loving it. But, like you I still find myself lusting for other cars every now and again. The mini is a great car and will be fun for a long time if you decide to keep it

Thanks!

I think I'll be happier with the Mini too. Closer to the Miata that I really loved and wish I didn't trade, and this time with cargo and head room. The Z was powerful, but it was also big, terrible visibility, etc. Also some other things that bugged me like ridiculously soft paint where even the slightest rock chip would go all the way through the paint. I bought it LOADED for $26k with 9k miles, and traded it in to the Jeep dealership 6mo later for $25,500, so I don't regret giving it a whirl at all.

Yeah, I'm always this way with bikes. We're big into track days and all that, and I'm actually the admin of our local sportbike forum. I've normally got my "main" bike, and then a second license plate for the fun toys I swap around (an 05 ninja at the moment). The Triumph in my sig actually belongs to the wife, who's been known to kick some trackday @$$ on her own.

I'm crossing my fingers about the reliability issues I always hear about, but I think the mini will be the best fit for me. Especially with the 3-year no maintenance deal and all that. Looking forward to getting to know this board.

If you like the track on your motorcycle, you'll love it in your MINI. Welcome aboard and happy motoring.

I don't even want to know how much you lost on new car depreciation and taxes Lord knows I've lost plenty myself over the past 10 years. I average about 1.5 cars per year. At any rate...grats on the purchase! Hope you like this one enough to hold on to it. I'm a month in mine and so far liking it a lot!

Welcome! I'm sure you're gonna love the MINI. I never owned a Z but I rented a 350 when I was sure it was going to be my next car. I loved the looks, I loved the sound, I loved the power. But after two full days of driving, I hated the fact that I couldn't see crap. If the windows were tinted, I'm pretty sure I'd be getting into accidents all the time at night. The power was addicting though, but after an ECU remap the MCS feels pretty much perfect.

Agreed. Straight power-wise, it takes quite a lot to impress me after riding sportbikes for several years. My Ducati supposedly does 0-60 in like 2.3 seconds? 155hp and 100ft-lbs of torque in a 400lbs package is pretty tough to beat, even with supercars.

Oh, I can understand that. My extended family all went to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Since we lived in Slidell at the time, I was the first to go to LSU, and my brother and sister followed. My brother is in his last year at the LSU med school in Shreveport right now. All three of us loved Baton Rouge though, wouldn't mind living there again one of these days.
