handle in the rear access panel?

Im going to install the alarm and while looking around I found this handle on the drivers side access panel in the boot. What is it for? I have a non S 2006 MC and my gas tank door just opens it doesnt lock or anything. What could this possible be for?

That is the release for the fuel door in case you are out of gas and there is no electrical power to unlock the doors.... Battery run down or blown fuse etc.

If your fuel door does not lock when you lock the other doors then something is broken. I know the flimsy plastic lock pin in my '10 fuel door does not seem like it would hold up well if the fuel door was forced.

Also note the fuel door does not lock if the engine is running.
This is good for me as I am in OR and not allowed to fuel my own car.
This way the fuel door is always unlocked when I pull up to the pump even if the other doors were locked from the inside.
If that were not the case it would surely be broken by now.
