Hey yall

My name is John. I don't own a MINI but I've been a technician for MINI for 3 years so I know the cars very well. Obviously I cant tell you everything so I can keep some type of job security . Hopefully I can be a good asset to this forum. Keep motoring!

Thanks for being available for our dumb questions. I'll be the first- Are there any changes to engine mx items like filters from 2010 and 2010? Also what is the most common issue you see in the new cars and is any one model more prone to write ups than another? Thanks in advanced

No problem. Im guess your asking if there is a difference between the 2010 and 2011? The engines got a technical update in 2011, very minor though. I haven't the chance to do any maintance on them yet because they are so new. As far as problems go for the R55-R57 the S naturally has more problems because there are more components on the car. The S isn't a bad car by any means but you do have to watch a few things a little close compared to the cooper.

1. The Cooper S uses a high pressure fuel system and Direct fuel injection and there are problems that come along with this type of system on any manufacture if you don't take care of it, ie carbon buildup on the intake valves. You have to use premium high quality fuel and I highly recommend getting a fuel injection flush once a year as well as a fuel additive offered by MINI.
2. Watch your oil. MINI oil services usually come up between 15000-1800 miles depending on how you drive. I would recommend doing at least one oil service in between and check your oil from time to time.
3. Hood scoops will warp. Heat from the turbo will warp the hood scoop if your driving the car the way it should be drivin . There are a few companys that will sell heat shields. Get one.

Other than those things to watch out on the S both cars are very good.

We love our MINI techs around here! So far all of my personal issues with my R56 Cooper have been self-inflicted

If it's the 'brake' light your talking about;

If the color is red check your brake fluid it could be low or you could be do for brake pads/sensor so check what your car is due for.

If its yellow or if you did both of those things and it still wont come off you should take it into a dealer because there is probabaly a problem with the abs/dsc system.
