Hello from Mexico

Hi Everyone, I've been lurking the NAM forums for some time and will probably get a 2011 MCS. Just waiting for the orders to start down here. As you might know Mexico is going through a rough patch right now. Would you guys have any advice regarding a MINI down here? I am originally from Cambridge, MA but been down here for a while.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum, know of no problems with having a MINI in Mexico, just watch out for the pot holes and other drivers.

Welcome to NAM
I assume you are in Mexico City or Monterrey, NL either I advise keeping the run flats with 16 inch wheels.

Thank you both for your replies, I am indeed in Mexico City and by now I am well acquainted with the pot holes Down here they offer "packages"(Pepper, Chili, Hot Chili...) and therefore they make MINI much less customizable. This affects me because the one I want only comes with 17" wheels and if I chose a "lower package" and added the options it would become more expensive making it pointless.. from what I've read the 17" aren't that bad..or are they?

No not terrible, just 16s offer more forgiveness for pothole incidents, and tires are cheaper including runflats. Only reason I suggest RF's is potholes and lack of shoulders to pull aside on certain autopistas. Or you can always get a set of 215/45-17 or even 215/50-17 run-flats after oems tire wearout.

Just what I was thinking, the only autopista I use is from Mexico City to Cuernavaca and Acapulco, the first part is in excellent shape and I have even taken part in similar event to The Dragon with the Porsche Club. While I have never gotten a flat down here I know that if I didn't go for the RF I would get it... So I guess I'll worry when the oems wear out. Thanks!

I also see that two of you guys have a JCW, I envy you both, I wish I could consider it BUT from other people I know the suspension is to hard for these roads along with it being a stick shift, this can become a nightmare in traffic. I know what you'll say but after spending more than 3 hours in stop'n go traffic you'll switch to an automatic the next day

The one thing I remember in my travels to Mexico City was alot of horns and know one believes in lanes or even stop lights. Is it still that way? If so buy an extra loud horn attachment in case they don't see you.

Hey Tater Tot, unfortunately it still is like that in some parts. The good thing is that I don't have to visit those places often, and if I do I simply take another car. I do have a spare air horn, but I am afraid to install it and get pulled over. The last thing I want to do is mess with the police... You'd be surprised at how calm the city can be if you drive in the right roads at the right time

Yea, all I can remember is the traffic!!! But there was some great food and scenery. With 6 airbags in a car you can't go wrong. I figure in the Cooper the first air bag saves your life the other 5 just beat the sh--! out of you. Good Luck
