15% pulley

Hi, All

I just had the fun of visiting MITM this last weekend. Ended up with the first mod to my 02 MCS -- a 15% pulley installed by the fine guys from Way Motor Works. It really has made a nice difference in drivebility. It now seems like the gas pedal and the engine are working together rather than there being some lag time and starts from a stop are so much better (no need to rev the engine extra just to do a routine start from a stop sign). Highly recommend this mod to anyone that is thinking about it.

...a "15% pulley"...
Jim,

Care to elaborate a little on what that is for us "not so educated" new mini owners?

Thanks...

Smaller pulley on the super charger to generate more boost. I have a 17% myself. Great mod!

15% pulley

I, too, am what would be called an uneducated owner in many ways. As the previous response indicated it is a smaller pulley that replaces the stock pulley on the supercharger. Needless to say, the smaller pulley will make the supercharger turn a little faster -- hence more air and boost to the engine. From what little I learned, 15% is the mildest size with basically no worries and something like a 19% is wilder and can possibly cause future maintenance issues. But most of this is way beyond my knowledge, too. I just know that I am very pleased the the improved performance with no noticable down sides.

Hmmmm...this "improvement" doesn't make much sense to me.

I thought turbo design involves balancing exhaust gas flow with compressor air flow volume. Add to this equation shaft speed, shaft weight, compressor and turbine housing flows and turbine wheel tip speeds . What about inlet and exhaust cam design, exhaust primary and secondary pulsed extractor lengths, variable turbo inlets and wastegates!

Seems to me the "improvement" just threw the original design parameters out the window.

I'm so happy we could help.

As for mbu making sense, His car is supercharged not turbo charged. So putting a smaller pulley on the supercharger allowed him to gain a few pounds of boost and several HP. It was a small amount of boost so it hasn't hurt anything else.

Thanks, Waylen. Basically what I was going to say. What MBU said was right on for the newer engines, but the earlier engines, like mine, using a supercharger, while trying to accomplish the same purpose used different components that worked differently.
