Where is it/am I looking at the right thing???

Hi, pretty new with the forum and with the car, 07 S. I've been on before with cruise control and oil changes, thanks for the responses on those threads. What I've got now is, I'm going to change my oil filter and add a quart. I'm about 130 miles from my dealer and am a little nervous running 15K between changes, I've got a little over 6K on the car now. I got looking under the car and under the hood, now, I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but was having a hard time finding what I thought would be the oil filter. Under the hood looking down past the radiator recovery tank to the left is an item that looks like it could be the filter. It is fairly big in dia. and has what looks to be a nut on the end, but looks to be plastic?? Is this in fact the oil filter housing?? And, if this is it, what size is the nut?

Thanks
Steve

SteelersFan,

Thanks!! Very good thread, lots of information that I needed, now, while I'm there, I think I'll change the oil completely instead of just the filter and a quart. I'm a little nervous about going 15K miles between oil changes, especially with a turbo car.

You're welcome. Yes, going 15k between oil changes *seems* excessive. There has been A LOT of discussion on this. Do a search and you'll see what I mean.

Got done with my oil change, not too bad of a job. I did find something that I do think should be noted on Z3Bum's procedure. The oil drain plug is not a T50 Torx, it's an 8mm allen. I don't think that I would use the Torx bit to loosen this plug, especially if it's really tight, you might strip out the hole. It did work for me, but after finding that it is an allen or internal hex, that's what I'm going to use after this.
