Rides, rides and more rides
Make your plans to participate in the MINIs in the Mountains (Aug 10-13, '06) because there are LOTS of mountain rides to do, including just getting to/from Copper Mtn, Colo. from anywhere. There will be 10 scenic, twisty rides -- you choose. For example, from Copper Mtn, heading south and climbing toward Leadville (elev. 10,152) with views of Mt Elbert (elev. 14,443). Then west over Independence Pass (elev. 12,095) and into Aspen. Turning north, how about a summer night dip in the huge hot springs pool in Glenwood Springs, along the Colo. River? Heading back you'll bag Vail Pass (16,666) before arriving in Copper Mtn. Or, come back a different way. Use Google Earth (earth.google.com) to view satellite terrain images with overlayed highways and map data of Colorado. Watch NAM for updates and information.
How about some Rides? Here are 10 of the many that are planned...
1. The Leadville Loop – Copper Mountain to Leadville to Minturn to Vail to Copper Mountain. www.leadvilleusa.com

When you come to Colorado, we will take you places where, when you park, the front of your car is 3 1/2 ft higher than the back of your car. Many of us carry rocks to block the wheels in such circumstances, and we make sure your clutch is well adjusted.
BTW, don't forget the sunscreen:

Hoping to get to come. Driving in mountains will definitely be different than the gulf coast! Nothing is as flat as the gulf coastal plain in Texas! Barring hurricanes, we will try to be there!
Welcome Nechesmini
I don't know where on the Gulf Coast you are coming from, but you may want to be in touch with the New Mexico MINI folks, also coming up from the south. They will be coming from various locales in NM and since they know....they can also turn you on to the scenic, non-Interstate routes thru Colorado to Copper Mountain. See www.nmmini.org
On the other hand, depending on the time you have, some of our best scenery is on the Front Range (Pueblo to Colorado Springs to Denver to Ft Collins to Greeley) and among other things you may want to consider are the Royal Gorge, Garden of the Gods, and the Western Dragon which starts in Evergreen, just west of Denver up I-25.
Feel free to RSVP this week and schedule your lodging, and also use our FRAPPR map. Our rides will take you places like Mt. Evans (www.mountevans.com) which is the highest paved road in North America. We are going up it, for pictures
We hope to meet you here, at AMVIV, at the Dragon, or wherever.

HI 5280!
We're building our group here in NM for the event and looking forward to supporting your first big affair.
I wonder how many people are interested in a LARGE group photo session and willing to pay for big prints?
Any ideas where this could happen - some semi-aerial location to look down on 100-200 cars?
Cheers,
Steve

jsouz,
We registered today for the MTM but need some information on nearby campgrounds to accomodate our motorhome. We are towing one MINI and son Jon is driving his. We have tried Frisco but did not find anything. You had mentioned something about a State Campground at nearby Lake but that link didn't work. Need some suggestions.

Glad you asked about camping...
Try this:
www.TownOfFrisco.com for information on the immediate area.
www.dillonrangerdistrict.com for information about the lake
www.summitcolorado.com/frisco/camping-on-lake-dillon.php
for starters. Frisco is the nearest town to Copper Mountain where we will be. It is just 9 miles down the highway. The lake (Dillon, in Summit County) borders the town, and the towns of Dillon and Silverthorne.
Please let us know if this does not work. You should be able to make Lake Dillon camping reservations easily.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Thanks for registering. There is no camping at Cooper Mountain itself, but a few miles along I-70 eastbound are the towns of Frisco, Dillon (and the Reservoir) and Silverthorne in the White River Nat'l Forest. Here are some leads from the Colorado Guide (2005). Please contact www.reserveusa.com or 1-877-444-6777 and search for these specific Colorado campground names: Silverthorne (all along I-70): Heaton Bay, Peak One, Pine Cove, Prospector, Lowry and Blue River. You can make reservations on www.reserveusa.com. There are also smaller, primitive campgrounds along Hwy 91 heading toward Leadville from Copper Mountain and even a few along I-70 heading toward Vale (westbound), but they may be harder to reserve at this point. Please post your findings.
Rick (PauHana), MINI5280 President
Glad you asked
Each MITM participant will receive from us, at registration, a WELCOME Guide. Among other information (schedule of events, rides, logistics, etc) will be details about our "Group and Go" information for rides. Here is a short summary of how our rides will work:
Thanks,
Jonathan
- We did not SCHEDULE the rides. We employ the Group-and-Go concept due to the number of and variety of rides.
- We ask that you come to the parking structure, to find or create a group of pp who want to do a particular ride at a particular time
- Your group, large or small, takes off when it is ready. Consensus rules.
- The point is to motor to and with whom you want, not necessarily the whole group.
- The other dynamics will influence this. For example, we don't want to send 100 cars up Mt. Evans at once...with 2 mins per car at the gate to register, that is 200 mins in line. It is easier in small groups.
- We highly recommend RMNP Rocky Mtn National Park on FRIDAY. Saturdays are the busiest days, and this is the biggest tourist attraction in the State.
- and so on.
Thanks,
Jonathan
