I´m new here in the forum and found this nice discussion about different mounts for mobile navigation systems.

What do you think about this solution? TOMTOM mobile navigation in the dual pod cluster (speedometer/rev.counter).

It´s for the Cooper Convertible 2007 of my wife. 12V to 5V Adapter and Mini-USB connector integrated in the housing. No additional cables, only the OEM 7-pin plug.

yes, no glass on the right side. No probs with sattellites. System was installed for a short time and everything works great. But I need a new trim panel finisher steering column top (TWIN) part 51 45 7 157 357 (07/04->) because I have the wrong part 32 31 1 493 692. Tomorrow I get it.
But think about it, it´s a Cooper Cabrio (Convertible), so you have no Faraday Cage I think. No external GPS antenna needed, but TOMTOM offers it as an option.

I'm getting ready to get a TomTom Go510 (in advance of MOTD ) and found to my disappointment that Proclip doesn't make a holder for it.

I see some interesting hacks out there (that look great) but doesn't anyone make a center-mount angled style mount for these?

I'm not familiar with the TomTom mount - but perhaps a custom mount similar to what I did for my Nuvi would work? Uses a Panvise vehicle mount, and sacrifices a stock Nuvi suction cup mount.

and do you have any pictures of the back of the pod- does the whole tomtom unit fit in there without modification.

That's by far the coolest navigation related mount I've seen in a MINI great job!

 

We would seriously appreciate as complete of a write-up as possible on how you accomplished this (what parts to order, where to order from, cost, installation methods etc). Phenomenal job, and very impressive! I have a Tomtom G0700, and would really like to find a more permanent mount solution that has a cleaner look.

 

It´s the TomTom One "New Edition", retail price in Germany 249,- Euro, and you need a dual pod cluster, retail price in Germany 260 Euro. There are some modifications on the TomTom unit.

you need a TomTom One "New Edition", retail price in Germany 249 Euro, also a dual pod cluster from BMW-Mini, retail price in Germany 260 Euro, a trim panel finisher (TWIN) from BMW-Mini, 10 Euro, a switch to disconnect the 12V when you have connection to your PC or Notebook via USB-Mini plug (both is optional). Also you need some other parts and hours of time.

I have bought the first of this navi-solution from him and added some improvements as integrated switchable 12V to 5V converter and Mini-USB socket in the housing. It´s really perfect.
If you are searching for the best aftermarket car navigation solution in relation with the best price, you have found it here.

I haven´t found an alternative.

I have 2 sub-60 second solutions for mounting my Garmin Nuvi 350.

I did not want to drill or dismantle or velcro anything...

Quickest way:
Just pop it into the TOP ring of that godawful cup holder - it fits PERFECTLY, with enough grip that it does not pop out even on the twisties!
And boy is it easy! Convenient location, and you can just shove the power cable down in the back behind the lighter socket.

My preferred way (I dont live in CA)...
Suction mount in the lowest point possible on the driver's side lower left corner of the windsheild, then route the power cable down past the pillar, down, then nudge it in where the dash and the lower trim piece meet, al the way across under the steering columnm then back behind the pillars to the power outlet.
With just gentle nudging, it is virtually invisible, end easily reversible should you change your mind or need to pull the whole thing out to put it in another car. It's so easy to do...and really does not show. It really does not obstruct vision while driving at all.
It's positioned quite well for viewing and touching.

Oh yeah - I have also tried suctioning it to the Chrono panel, and the positioning is fine, but it doesn't seem to stay too long...suction loses it's grip, plus it does sorta block things you want to see.

Thanks a lot. I like your solution to this and yes, it it is probably the best solution for me given what that I want to put it exactly where you have your Nuvi.

So, if I read your install correctly, the black plate that you've screwed to the Panavise mount is from the OEM Navi suction cup mount, yes?

 

I don't know if you'd consider this clean, but it's easy and cheap. I took a $3.00 foam car cup-holder insert, sliced the back, and wrapped it around the GPS suction-cup mount/arm. I then stuck the entire thing into the OEM cup holder that hangs off the passenger side. I imagine I could do the same with those $1.00 foam soda can insulator things, too.

That is where my Nuvi resides...

 

That's a good spot. Unfortunately that's exactly where my HK display sits (for the i-pod interface) -- except on the left hand side for me.

 

Yea, I should have mentioned that mine is about 5 feet to the left too...

 

I'm suprised no one's mentioned the Kuda mount for the TomTom:
