Watching this show right now. It's on again at 11PM. They had a segment on The Dragon. Of course they call it the "Tail Of". I just have to quit letting that bother me I guess.

It features our friends Darryl and Lori; the Killboys. They were Best Man and Maid of Honor at our wedding and it's just too cool to see them on National television. The silver S2000 shown drifting around is Darryl, and Lori is in the white MINI seen being nearly taken out by a semi. Good show!

I went to MOTD last year. what a great time! amazing roads. no words or video can truly describe it. I was lucky enough not to see any 18-wheelers while out there.

Everyone be safe out there and enjoy!

I have a couple things from "The Official" Dragon shop (at least I think it is the official shop) that call it The Tail of the Dragon...my question is how do we know that (just) Dragon is the correct name? Not trying to make anyone's head explode or anything, I just dont understand why some people are so, ummm..., passionate that it is (just) Dragon vs. Tail of the Dragon. I have gone looking for the answer and couldnt come up with anything so I figure I must be missing something. Will someone tell me what it is?

The Tail of the Dragon is the Gas station/ Gift shop ( at the end of the Dragon ) ergo the name, the road itself is " The Dragon "

Here is the story that my Wife put together.

The T-shirt shack came along and named itself the "Tail Of The Dragon" as docv said, started a web site, and of course did everything they could to make people think that was the name of the road in order to promote themselves.

If you are down there amongst regulars calling it 'Tail Of' you will be regarded as a rube.

On a map the road always kind of looked like the spine of the Dragon so I did wonder where the tail talk came from since it didnt make sense in context of how the road appears to me. The store being at the tail (end) and being called that would make sense, thanks. Since I only know the road because of the MINI and MOTD, it was just the Dragon to me. Then I got home and noticed that the postcard and squished penny read as 'Tail of' then I saw the debates and was just kind of wondering what the heck made the (just) Dragon people so convinced they were right. Didnt occur to me that was just the name of the store. It's really kind of brill of the store, they have certainly convinced a lot of people.

Saw the show last night. For those that are wondering the video posted above is all that appears in the show.

Yeah, the problem is that there is no "official" name. It's not like the Blue Ridge Parkway that appears on the map. It's just folklore. So in that sense one name is just as official as another. The fact that a commercial enterprise wants to change it for their benefit is what burns people.

I agree with you, kinda stinky of them to do this! I grew up in a family of gear-heads whom had always called this passage "The Devil's Backbone" and I always said it sounded like a good time! Have a good day y'all!
