So while cruising Jalopnik.com before bed I found this fun story...
Chevy Tahoe Messes With Texas Mini Cooper, Pays Price
Some SUV buyers tend to feel that they're captaining the dreadnoughts of the road, impervious to all harm and thus free to futz with cupholders and electronic gadgetry rather than pay attention to traffic signals. In this incident in Texas- which, fortunately, did not result in any major injuries- a Chevy Tahoe was T-boned by a Mini Cooper and flipped right over. LeMons Neon racer and Enzo rejuvenator Matt Groner sends us these photos and a description of the wreck written by his friend, who was behind the wheel of the Mini:

LeMons Neon racer and Enzo rejuvenator Matt Groner sends us these photos and a description of the wreck written by his friend, who was behind the wheel of the Mini:
"These pictures were taken by one of the firemen who were called to the scene, with his camera phone. The officials who responded to the accident could not believe that the Mini (and I) sustained so little damage. The other vehicle involved is a Chevy Tahoe. I was driving south on a one-way street and the other driver was driving west, also on a one-way street. The other driver ran a red light (that had been red for a long time) and appeared in the intersection just in front of me as I came through. I didn't even see them. I hit the passenger's side of Tahoe head-on, and the Tahoe rolled. In one of the pictures, you can see the Mini-shaped dent in the vehicle that is on its side. The driver of the Tahoe was unhurt and did get a ticket. She was also insured."

Jalopnik.com X-post: MCS flips a Tahoe (w/pics)
Forgive me if ya'll have seen this article already, but I was pretty amazed to see the clearly supernatural strength of the MCS...

People don't realize that larger /= safer when it comes to crashes. I saw almost the same thing happen with a small honda t-boning a big pickup truck on the passenger side. The truck first rolled to the side, then flipped twice end over end. The girl in the honda got out and was fine. The truck driver was taken out by helicopter, and the passenger in the truck was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
While the MINI in these pics certainly is no longer drivable, unlike possibly the Tahoe (flipped upright), I would still rather have been in the MINI. The car looks like it took the damage well instead of the people.

Sure the Mini is in bad shape, but certainly the Tahoe is too. The whole side is smashed in, windows probably all broken. Then the side that is up against asphalt. All scrapped up, mirrors broken, windows broken. The SUX, oh, I mean SUV is most likely totaled as well.
But I agree MINI-charged, I would have wanted to be in the MINI for the crash for sure.

I still keep coming back to look at these pictures. I am really amazed that this MINI doesn't have more damage than it does. Just saw the show "Dogs 101" the other night and it was about the Bulldog... the breed created to bring down the bulls. Who knew we had so much in common with them.
I had mentioned in another post about the recent deaths of 2 MINI drivers in the past year... both in residential neighborhoods in the 30-35mph range within 7 miles from my home. They were not dangerous roads... but both died because they were not wearing seatbelts. (By the way, I believe that it should be a freedom of choice whether or not to wear one... it was just unfortunate that those two people died. )
There haven't been too many MINI's around here until this past year so when the first accident happened there were many people that thought it was me. (Even the guy that lives across from my mom and has never talked to me, talked to her and asked if I still had my "little car"... then he proceeded to tell her how unsafe they are and that she should talk to me. I am 37... but I do look much younger .)
Although I can understand why so many would assume that MINI's are not safe (due to size) I think that the safety of this little beast should be publicized! This is just one of the many examples (I'm sure) of accidents where the MINI driver walks away. I love it!
