brake fluid question?

This may be a noobie question of sorts but is 1 liter of fluid adequate if I am bleeding my brakes and replacing the fluid with something else? Should I plan on buying 2 liters? This one should be easy but I couldn't find it in here. Thanks!

1L is usually enough - but I normally buy 2L for a flush. I tend to run about ~1.5L though the system, 2 complete cycles, to ensure a complete flush.

I flush once, let the system sit for 15 minutes, and then do another cycle. I personally like to alternate between Ate Blue and Motul RBF 600 (or another golden colored fluid), to ensure that I get all the old fluid out of the system. I like to flush the system 2x a year at a minimum, and more if I do more track days... I run a LOT of fluid through to ensure I get all the used stuff out...

Just my $.02!

I actually bought three cans o' ATE Blue when I swapped in my lines, pads, & rotors.

We barely touched the third can BUT we did need some of it to ensure proper bleeding. And I was happy that we didn't have to search high & low or wait for delivery of that extra 25% of the third can used....

I recommend RaceShopper.com if you do not have a local source for the fluid.

TXWerks drives his car hard and his fluid swap procedure is very thorough to compensate. I've had plenty of luck with 1L of fluid per swap with a Motive Power Bleeder. By eye (complete color change), I seemed to get a complete flush and by performance (good brake feel) it seems to have gone well, too. I don't Auto-X or track that often, so I probably change out the fluid well before it really NEEDS it.

It might be good to have an extra Liter on the shelf (unopened), just in case you need a top-up at some point (or want to take some extra to a track-day), so ordering a second bottle might be a good choice.

As an aside, and probably overkill too, you might want to change the fluid every 30 days if your rig is a daily driver too. I drive 3-4K a month with a couple of track events thrown in. Pedal firmness is noticable. I too use ATE Super Blue and Motul for the reason Twerks pointed out.

I offer this info because most clubs insist the fluid be changed every 30 days. Most of the cars are daily drivers; heat cycles as well as time affect the fluid.

I think I will probably go with two bottles just in case. However, since I don't track my vehicle at all and the hardest driving I ever do is up to the mountains here, I prob. could get away with one bottle. But thanks for the input! If anyone else wants to chime in, please feel free.

PS: I use ATE typ 200. It's the same as ATE SuperBlue, but it doesn't have the blue dye. If you are out of warranty, you can alternate (as mentioned above) so you can see how well the bleed is going. If you still have a warranty, the typ 200 is very close to the color of the stock fluid (MINI fluid is slightly green) so they might not notice it...
