Faint brake squeal as lose last 2 or 3 mph

Good evening,

For about the last week, I noticed a very faint squeal from one of my brakes. It only happens every now and then, and only when I'm applying them very gently, starting at maybe 3mph and continuing to 1-ish mph.

Car only has 5500 miles and I'm light on the brakes, so I don't think it's the metal worn-out-brakes squealer in the pads.

Any thoughts? Caused by this? By that? No big deal? Service immediately before the car self-destructs?

Thanks! --Doug

many factors could make your brakes squeek. Just let it go for awhile and see if it goes away. If not just get them checked out.

Mine did that too - from about 10K miles until I replaced ALL the stock pads with Mintex redbox pads around 40K miles. When I finally replaced them, only one pad in the rear was warn down very low - the rest were still OK (I was doing mostly highway driving)

Doug- That's so bizarre! I'm at about 5500 miles and my brakes just started squealing too!
It mostly squeals when my wife drives, but I think it's just because she typically brakes lighter than I do. I was planning on getting some aftermarket pads soon (mostly for dust concerns) but maybe sooner if this squealing is a recurring problem for stock pads.

Mine squeal a tiny bit when I'm barely moving. I've got about 1500 miles.

mine squeaks a little just before stopping in colder temps. once above
35F or so, no more noise.

on a open road, try running 50mph and brake hard (not slam it) to
20mph and repeat. you may have gunk on the pads that needs to
come off.

Mine squeak a bit at the end of a slow stop when the weather gets cooler. I was worried the 1st year it happened but after checking the pads & seeing that they were not worn & reading that this happens to many other owners too I have learned that it is the norm for Mini brakes in the winter

This is too weird! I'm also at about 5500 miles and last night as I was driving around my brakes were squeeling as well in the same way described by T2Nav! And I was going to post something about it today to ask if people thought something was wrong. Coincidence? I don't think so...

My first thought was that it might be the cold as it was between 35 and 37 degrees last night. I'll wait for a while and see where it goes from there...

Thanks everyone for chiming in! Based on the inputs, sounds like it's a fleet-wide thing and not something that's broken inside my car. Now that I think about it, the little squeal did arrive with an annoying cold spell. --Doug

Ditto, except I had the dealer look at mine last week when i stopped by to pick up another key. They pulled off all 4 tires, checked all the pads, cleaned all the brake dust off, put it back together and no more squealing. They said it was the brake dust causing it to squeal.

Not sure how true that statement is, but there's no more squealin' coming from my brakes.

Anyone else have a problem with brake dust (j/j )?

Mike

Just give it a week or so and a little bit of colder weather and they'll be squeeling again as if they always have ................ I'd be worried if it got cold and my brakes DIDN'T squeel ... goes with the Mini, cold weather and brake dust. I'm @ 83,000km .. brakes OK

Yup, it's embarrasing! I just apply brakes more aggressively all the time now to avoid it.... so far it's working out stoppingly!

Just so long as you don't have to walk around with a neck brace!

Mine, with 37K miles will do this occasionally as well. Not a show stopper, but annoying. It did it for the first time for a bit in the downhill traffic jam at Hoover Dam at AMVIV III.:impatient
It does so infrequently enough that I forget to tell my SA when I bring it in.
