brake pedal to the floor

When sitting at a stoplight with the car running should you be able to get the brake pedal to touch the floor by applying A LOT of pressure or should this be impossible?

I think it should be impossible, unless you apply enough pressure to bend something.

The brake pedal dropping to the floor usually indicates a fluid leak, a master cylinder problem or air in the system. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder reservior. If it is rapidly dropping when you pump the pedal, you most likely have a leak. If the level remains fairly constant, then air most likely has entered the system and the brakes need to be bled.

Have you had work done recently on the brake system? Also, if the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir has dropped below the minimum level due to pad wear, then air can be pumped into the lines causing a mushy feel in the pedal.

I had this happen in an old car. If it is completely random, chances are pretty high that you should check the master cylinder. Have you done any work on your breaks very recently?

Cheers and good luck

The only way this coud happen is if you have a leak in the system or a bad master cylinder,

otherwise, the pedal should go down, until you reach maximum pressure, and stay steady.
