I called tirerack today ready to order 215/50/16 and the guy could not guarantee that they would fit. Said that 205/50/16 would be the best way to go.
I want the higher sidewall that the 215 offer, cause the roads around NYC are horrible!
Has anyone tried this size on stock R84 wheels? And are Kumho tires any good?

Thanks,

Paul.

between 205-215 your picking up .2 inches in each sidewall, but the 205-215 is a width increase. the apect ratio is a persentage of the 1st number, thats why the sidewall change occured.

I have 1 cm of clearance between the strut and the tire on my stock 195/55/16 setup. Do you know if going to 215/50/16 will increase its width to the point that they would rub?

Thanks,

Paul.

I think there is a possibility at full suspension travel. One of those test fit situations, as Tirerack can not promise this will fit.

Paul,

1 cm = 10 mm. Going from 195 to 215 increases the width of the tire ~ 20mm...that equals 2 cm.

Splitting the difference, ~ 1 cm is added to each side of the tire...width. You have 1cm clearance from the strut tower....cutting it close.

A handy rule of thumb is that 25mm = 1", for those that may be metrically challenged like myself.

See ya,

Kumho also tends to make some of the widest casings on the market.

Got the tire mounted today. It fits!! I love it!! Now my ride should be smoother and have additional protection from NYC potholes.
215/50/16 Kumho look perfect on this car and only $77 at TireRack.

Paul.

P.S. Anyone in need of 4 brand new runflats? Dunlop SP Sport 5000 DSST in 195/55/16. I`ll sell them for $400.

I also have a set of nearly new 195/55-16 Dunlop runflats for sale. $200. They're in San Francisco.

How many miles on them? Did you upgrade to 17" or go with regular 16" tires. I'm debating if I should go with standard tires.

I replaced them with 16" Falken Azenis for autocrossing. The take-offs have less than 1000 miles -- I'll have to find the mounting receipt to give you a more precise number. If you need more details, send me an e-mail at michael_butler@pacbell.net.
