Hub centering rings

Ok I need help I mounted up my SSR GT1s and had some stearing wheel shimmy at speeds over 35-40mph . I took the wheels off and removed one of The centering rings the markings are as follows
  1. "MILLE MIGLIA"
  2. 072.2/056.1
  3. AL561
Does anyone know if these are the correct rings? I will be bringing the wheels in for rebalance next week. These wheels will be off the car till spring to avoid the potholes.Any help woould be great.

If the ring fits tightly on the hub and tightly in the wheel, then it's the right ring. Try swapping your wheels front to back and see if the shimmy goes away. It could be a tire or wheel issue.

This is the same thing I have been dealing with for the last 3 days. Shimmy at almost all speeds in the steering wheel though. I am tired of dealing with it and out of money to get the wheels rebalanced for a third time...wheels will be returned tomorrow.

One other thing to try...

I have plastic rings in some Kazeras. I found that most times I torqued the wheels using "the standard way" I got some balance issues all the time.

Now I start at 40 ft-lbs, and go up in 10-15 ft-lb increments. It's a pain, but it works almost every time. Now, one it three wheel rotations need a reset on one of the wheels.

The inner dimension on your rings is right. Are the metal or plastic? If plastic, I found that just goint to torque in one or two torque setting never really worked well.

Just a thought.

Also, don't go to "tire mill" for mounting and balancing. Find a performance alignment shop in your area. They will take a bit more of your money, but I think you'll find that they do a much better job. I'm in the SF Bay Area, on the Penisula, and Custom Alignment has always done me right. One of the the fast places (don't remember the store, but next to a Kragens in Redwood City) did such a bad job on an alignment, I could have done it better by eye. And they just break out the air wrench to put on the wheels....

Good luck.

Matt

Thanks for the replies! I have metal rings. I will be shelving these wheels till spring so I will get them balanced at a good shop asap. I hate working all day and then having a problem like this come up at the end of the day. I will be installing a big brake kit soon and will go back to the big wheels again. I will report back when I fix this.

What a relief!

I took the set into the dealer to have them balanced on a road force balance machine. Well after the tech balanced the wheels many weights had to be removed and placed in other spots on the rims. A big thumbs up to Prestige for a job well done!

Thats the best bet, I find that for bigger rims with low profile tires, normal balancing machines don't work very well. I had so much trouble with my old Volvo with 215/45/17 rims I just sold the car for a MINI

Try a road force balance machine before giving up. Do it once, do it right!

One more thing to look at...

Custom Alignment in Mt View will measure the off-center error in the wheel and tire, and mount them opposite to help cancle it out before balance. Costs more, but for high speed stuff it's good, and it reduces the amount of weight needed to balance....

Hub size for 2004 cooper s

Is 56.1 mm hub size correct for 2004 cooper s?

I just got new autoX wheels (old ones + tires stolen) and hub centering rings were not included. I have an autoX on Saturday and no way for vendor to ship rings in time so will try to find some locally.

I put my caliper on the hub and got 55.8 mm. Probably a little wear after 60 or so wheel changes?

Thanks,

Gary H
