Best way to ship tire/wheel combo?
Best way to ship tire/wheel combo?
I'd like to ask the crowd what is the best and cheapest way of shipping a set of wheels and tires. I have sold a set of 16" R84s w/RunFlats and I need to ship them to the new owner. I'm thinking of wrapping them in saran wrap and shipping them greyhound. They are going from Vegas to Long Island, NY?
Tire Rack just puts heavy duty cardboard on both sides to protect the rims. The tires don't need protection so it doesn't matter if they are exposed on the tread.
Some sort of wrap around the cardboard and wheel should keep it all together. Clean, simple, and doesn't add extra weight.

Having just done this here's how I did it.
I got two "tv" boxes from a box store that were each just barely bigger than two wheels/tires (24" by 24" by 20"). Then I bubble wrapped each wheel/tire combination and put two wheels/tires in each box. It made for two packages that are roughly 66 lbs (at least in my case with 15" holeys and tires). At that size, the boxes are still manageable to handle. Cross country ground shipping from FedEx ran $50 a box.

When we shipped wheels we sold we found boxes/cardboard that would enclose the entire thing and used bubble wrap and extra cardboard to protect the faces of the wheels. I had had custom wheels arrive damaged from a store in the past that used the semi-covered method with strapping and did not want that to happen to anything we sent. We used UPS to ship them. Not cheap and time consuming but the wheels/tires have made it through fine every time, even accross country.
i used large 24x24x? boxes before. make sure it isn't too heavy. I think they charge more if over 80 pounds.
FedEx is usually cheaper than UPS when sending heavy stuff through ground.
