Can 215 45 17 be lowered
I just bought a set of 215 45 17 tires, wheels have a 40 off set. Have I taken away the option of lowering the car?

you *might* rub on the rear but even so, it will only be a small dremel work.
lower that car!

I have 215/45/17's on the stock S-lites, and I'm lowered with Tein H-tech (like .6" front, .5" in the rear)
No rubbing yet!

They will rub with 8" wide wheels but I have heard that they are typically OK with 7" wide wheels.

Tires and wheels
The tires are Toyo Proxes 4 and the width on the rims are 7". If I can lower which springs, would like to keep comfort, as roads aren't that great!!
