Non-Runflats make a big difference!

I finally replaced the S-Lite/runflat originals with an Enkei RPM2+Yokohama AVS combination, thanks to a great deal from 2perCooper. I must admit to doing this mostly for looks, as I really did not believe the hype about converting to non-runflats. My stock '05 MCS with S-Lites/runflats already handled like a go-cart.

I went for a drive with the runflats this morning, put on the new wheels & tires, and then drove the same twisty road. What a difference! Noticeably less vibration & road noise, crisper handling, and better response on the bumps.

The new wheel+tire combo weighs 38 lbs each, 8 lbs less than the 46 lbs for the S-Lites & Pirellis. Add back a few pounds for the 12V compressor and bottle of tire goop ($35 for both at Pep Boys) and it is still a significant weight savings.

Here's a photo with the new wheels. I strongly recommend this modification - the effect on handling is great!

Just you wait!

When you put the bar you got on, you'll feel another quantum improvement. The problem is that you won't want to stop with modifications. I wanted to do more and more power (from my roots as a small block ford guy), but the real tires opens your eyes. The rear bar is excellent as well. I like front camber plates, the wear on the front tires is much improved. I'm so-so on the lowering springs, I'm not sure that the H-sports have the right mix of spring constants.... Anyway, enjoy the new stickiness, it's tons o fun!

DrBob89,
That's great. A difference you can feel. Loosing the extra wheel weight is wonderful. Having grip in the twisties is "priceless".

Next time you hear about some new owner shedding runflats for some new rubber just remember how sweet it is.

Hey is everybody a Dr. on this thread????

With all of the post-grad education I/we've got we should be smarter. But, you are correct - the "modification bug" has bitten me. I might as well sign over my next paycheck to Steve's, because more power is certainly next!

I'm also a V8 guy, with a '66 Sunbeam Tiger in the garage and several '60's Mustangs in my past (including a GT-350H). I also vintage raced a '69 Ford Cortina. To be honest, the Mini is much more fun to drive on mountain roads...

tire change

Yeah. I got rid of the s-lites too and moved to 16 inch wheels (ASA LW5's) and BF Goodrich t/a's. What a difference. Smooter, faster, easier to handle...wow. I have also heard good things about the Toyo Praxis - 4 non runflats too.
