'04 R53 - E brake & Rear brake replacement

I will be performing a complete rear brake pad and rotor replacement on my own. This will be my first brake service experience on a Mini.
I've had the rear brakes done by a garage 40k mi a few years ago before I moved to another state. Unfortunately, I later discovered that the E brake was inoperable after their repair.
I was told by the dealer that a "certain step" regarding the E brake has to be done before R&R the rear brakes. Dealer charged me $1k to repair.
Searched online for DIY and videos but nothing is mentioned referring to this "certain step" with regards to the E brake and brake service..
Can anyone clarify or elaborate on this?

Uhhh. You have to wind the rear pistons back in because of the e-brake, but that’s pretty much all I remember being different from the fronts. Maybe they replaced the cables?

Ah - I had no idea.
The dealer never explained it to me. I believe they installed new calipers(?), if I remember correctly.
I will definitely have to get my Bentley out of storage when I am ready to do this.
As always - Thanks @deepgrey !

If they didn't retract the pistons after replacing the rotors and pads, I'm not sure that they would have been able to get the caliper back on. Anyway, do yourself a favor and get a brake caliper took kit -- it will make retracting the pistons much easier. I think I bought mine on Amazon. Something like this:
