Are Aspen Touring A/S so awful?
Are Aspen Touring A/S so awful?
I had a flat and went to NTB hoping it would get fixed, but they said they couldn't patch it, not even to let me go home and research tires and hopefully find something good on Tirerack's clearance. It had some cracks so it was a against their policy and they'd already pulled the nail, so it wouldn't hold air long enough to get me back home.
So, I had to buy this ASPEN Touring A/S. It was only about $57, Installed. The guy added a few discounts. I looked for reviews before reluctantly consenting and only found a couple, mostly the same very bad one over and over.
But, my tires are old and it is time to replace. I'm considering these Kumhos http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....num=955VR6PA31 Which are $73 and there's a $50 rebate for 4. Plus $50 shipping + installation.
But I'm wondering since I already bought one, are the Aspen so bad? While I don't want mushy tires, soft is a good thing as Houston's roads are really bad and I don't want to pay for more suspension damage. Obviously I want good traction although I rarely have to drive in inclement weather. And I'd like quiet. Most reviewing the kumhos say they are quiet.
These people don't seem to think the Aspens are so bad. http://www.safercar.gov/nhtsa-saferc...p/tireRatings/
And these reviewers seem to think they are fine in rain & ice:

I don't know that I can get the other 3 Aspens that cheap though. I don't find the tire on their website.
It's for an 05 Mini, still with on 55k miles. (I mostly work from home). And don't really do a lot of performance driving. Not interested in speeding & there's not a lot of fun roads in the Gulf coast area. I do like that when I have to swerve on the freeway, the car is solid. Quieter tires would make a road trip more appealing though.
I switched from the 17" run flat whatevers to 16" General Altimax after some expensive suspension related repairs. Plus gouged 17" rims parallel parking too close to a curb. If the Generals were quieter, it didn't take long before I got used to the new decibels.

Anyone?
The info on the tire says
Treadwear 440
Temp A
Traction A
Steel Belted RAdial
Made in Indonesia
Tread - 2 Poly + 2 Steel + 1 Nylon
Side - 2 Poly
205/50/16 87H - The last is the speed & load rating? and they are about what I want right?
DOT 7T3V 3MA13013. So they are about a year old. I can't find where to look up the meaning of the rest of the code. i.e. the manufacturer.

If you call around, you will find other shops that will patch nail holes in RFT tires, as long as the side wall is not damaged.

2). Find the absolutely best tires in each category by looking at the options and reading reviews here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Select...2&autoModClar=
3). Then buy the best tire that suits your needs. Usually, the cost difference between the best and the mediocre is not enough to warrant a second thought.
Wait, so you have 1 Aspen tire and 3 other tires on your car?
I've never heard of Aspen tires (probably a no-name brand for some Asian factory), but you definitely can not do worse than mix tire brands and models between different axles. Mixing different tires on the same axle is a definite recipe for unpredictable breaking and handling.

Aspens are no-name all-season crap. Cut your losses and ditch them.
Assuming you have stock 16" wheels, either 195/55 R16 (stock, 50 hits on tirerack.com) or 205/55-R16 (similar rolling diameter, 150 hits on tirerack.com) will great for you work.
You can choose something inexpensive, or top of the line max performance summer rubber. But stay out off all-seasons that are too mushy and trade warm weather traction for nothing you will ever see - sub-freezing traction.
Many folks have spoken kindly about Continental ExtremeContact DW tires. They are quiet, well handling, long lasting, and inexpensive at $95/pop.
