Kind of bummed. I think I may have a slow leak in one of my run-flats. I'm going to check it tomorrow & see if it's gone back down (down about 5#--enough to trip the idiot light)

And I've had it less than a week. Doh!

My Q is this--I was looking at tirerack and there're about 8 tires in the MINIs size (205/45-17) and I'm wondering if I can/should consider 205/50s--what's the impact?

(IIRC, 45 is the ratio of sidewall to tread, right? So we're talking about a 10mm taller sidewall?)

What's the impact to handling, speedo reading, etc?

TIA,

Jeff

Diameter diffrence is about 1 inch ( static unloaded) Bear in mind the profile is a percentage of the width, determining sidewall height {205 mm x .5) This is a variance in diameter about 4-5% from OE, lest say if your speedo say 60 mph, its more likely your going 62-63 mph. It will give a slightly softer ride, and slightly less persise steering input.

Let me know if you have additional questions

Thanks Dan. It looks like it's holding air after all, and that the pressure was just off between the wheels by a few PSI. (Need to get a better gauge!)

I think I'll stick with OE measurements. I'm definitely going to think about the non-run-flat tires, though. All the posts about losing 50-100#s of unsprung weight have picqued my interest.

Jeff-
What do all of these MCS owners that have saved 100 pounds do when they have a flat? Fill it with leak stop gook? Do they make any gook that doesn't end up ruining the wheel?

Since the MCS has a muffler where the MC TIRE is, I have grave reservations about going "run-flat-less"!

The MC's that come with the Run flats Don't have the Holes Punched in the body to support the lowering mech for the Spare... so it won't be simple...

Sort of Anoying...

Yeah, you're not kidding. I didn't realize it was spare-less until after purchasing. Definitely something to give you pause.

I found (after all the back & forth) the problem.

Picked up a sheet metal screw somewhere along the way. Had the car about a week before it happened. ****.

I think that if I were serious about not using the runflats that I'd carry a spacesaver or something in the back. I'm going to stick with the RFs for now, though.

I'm hoping that they'll be able to patch this one. Never got below about 30# of pressure so I'm hoping for the best.

I have gotten along with conventional tires and carrying a 12 volt air pump and a couple of cans of "Fixaflat." I've never had to use any of my backup equipment. The only flat I've had was running over a steel rod that was long enough to pierce the tire tread and the wheel. Not much you can do about that except carrying a spare wheel and tire. That was an expensive incident. I lost an SSR wheel and near new tire.

For me the bother of carrying the pump and fixaflat is preferable to driving on run flat tires. They have improved, but they are still have quite a ways to go before they are equal to conventional tires.

Keep Smiling,

Joe
