R56 OEM run flats vs board with nails on freeway
R56 OEM run flats vs board with nails on freeway
So some #*@# dropped a couple nailed wooden crates on the freeway today. I couldn't avoid the mess that was the nailed filled boards pointy side up. No blown tires and immediate (30 min after the fact) drop in pressure that I can see.
Are the oem run flats self sealing by chance, or should I expect 4 flats when I leave the office tonight?

They aren't self sealing, the air will leak out, but they wont look flat, even without air in them. After work, just drive to a tire store and have them checked out and repaired, if necessary.
You might call ahead, because some tire stores won't repair run flats, which can be done just like regular tires, if the damage is only in the tread area.

What I did when a similar instance happened to me was I filled up the tires with some air and listened for a "hiss" to confirm they had been punctured... Agreed with DneprDave, they won't look that flat so hard to tell just by visual.
yep - spousal unit couldn't understand why the light was on 'til I found the BIG bent nail in the tire
but she was better then a friend of mine - she stopped and asked . . . a friend of mine with a GEN1 had the TPMS lite come on. He stopped and checked the tires and thought everything looked good. He pushed the button and reset the light. And drove another 1000 miles plus on his vacation. When he got home he went to the dealer for service and mentioned that the lite had malfunctioned ... they pointed out the big hole in the tire.
True story - I swear . . .
Got runflats (or not) and want to avoid silly charges for repair of simple punctures?

I've run a runflat with two of these in it for many thousands of miles. I keep one in each car with one of those little air pumps and a pair of pliers (to get the nail out).
Does not replace a spare but is better than fix-a-flat or slime IMO.

With a larger hole I couldn't get a seal with the Dynaplug. The instructions say to use multiple Dynaplugs, but it wouldn't hold the air. At Walmart or Big Lots among others they have a Slime tire repair kit. I used that with the cement and the repair worked the first time and hasn't lost air. This wasn't in a run flat tire, but I assume the repair is the same. The Dynaplug does work well on small holes and is less invasive.

BTW I have seen Dynaplug at HarborFreight

no argument here ... every occurrence is unique
I got what I thought was a simple nail puncture and dyna' didn't seal it .... turns out the nail went in at a big angle but I didn't know that until well after I forced two dynaplugs in - straight down thru good tire. could have had the same issue with a simple plug .....
but my experience with slime/fix-a-flat is it throws the balance WAY out; and they are considered a temporary repair while a DYNAPLUG is "perm'" in my opinion anyway
HF did carry it for a time, not sure about now, I last looked for it over a year ago. You need to find the tire plug kits .... not the general automotive stuff . . . . sad, isn't it? I know the layout of my local HF
