Best R53 brake upgrade for <$1000
Best R53 brake upgrade for <$1000
Hi guys,
My stock brakes on my 05 Cooper S are on their way out, and I have some money, $1,000 to spend on replacing or upgrading my brakes.
I saw that Out Motoring sells a JCW upgrade for $799 is that the best route to improved performance?
Any advice/opinions on the best route for the dollar would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

You can opt to buy the R56 brakes and rotors. They use the same bolt pattern, are the same size as the JCW package, and will save you $$$. You just have to run 16" wheels minimum.
Personally, I decided to just upgrade to drilled rotors all round, with EBC Yellow Stuff kevlar pads on the front and OE-style ceramic pads on the rear. If you are hitting twisties or the track religiously, the JCW or R56 upgrade may be your better bet.

Morning, at the time i needed brakes i went with Cyro-Stop rotors,
and Ate superblue fluid and stainless lines from Tirerack, pads from
Carbotech and news wear sensors from MossMini and for the street
this combo works out great and well under a 1000 bucks
and if you wanted new pins from Tyrolsport

I just picked up the JCW upgrade from Jason at Classic Mini (440-585-9950 or email bmwparts@driveclassic.com) for ~$620 with the NAM discount. I looked at other upgrades but the JCW R53 Sport Brakes include front calipers, rotors, and pads all the way around, it was hard to justify anything else. I also installed stainless steel brake lines from Way. ATE Typ 200 fluid is what I run in all my cars and this was used with this setup at installation as well. I can't see that there is a need to go bigger unless tracking the car and many would argue the factory brakes are good enough for that.
