The Great Wheel Decision

Okay, so I guess this has been done to death but I really can't decide what to do about wheels... I've got my heart set on O.Z. Superturismo WRC 17" but I've been hearing good things about Team Dynamics. First off, does anyone know where I can get Team Dynamics in Canada or the northwest? Anyone have pictures of white TD wheels on a Mini? I'm looking for a clean multi-spoke design in white... and only white!
Pics and suggestions are appreciated!

Get Team Dynamics from outmotoring.com. You can get any size or offset your heart desires, though there are certain sizes that are reccomended on the website.

What ever wheel you end up getting just make sure they are forged made and not cast. As cast will break on you.

Um...I think every stock MINI wheel is cast. What exactly are you basing your statement on? Or...maybe you're joking?

I recommend checking out this thread, and looking at all the different wheels on MINIs. It will help you visualize, since there a limited number of wheels made to fit the MINI, there's a good chance someone else has them.....

This thread moved to Tires, Wheels and Brake forum for more ideas and discussion.

Search for white wheels-

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...t=white+wheels
(Don't powdercoat Forged wheels as the temperature needed for powdercoating may affect the wheel alloy).

At tirerack.com (see Alex) in 17" white painted
Gramlights 57 Optimise 17x7.5 $320 each
Gramlights 57 Maximum 17x7 17.5 lbs $312 each
O.Z. Superturismo WRC 17x7 21.4 lbs $236 each

For team dynamics check with various vendors-
See outmotoring.com, ask them if they will mail to canada or Northwest.

Most aftermarket and stock wheels are gravity cast alloy if they are not steel rims. This helps to lower cost and is reasonable in weight given the demand for a given size.

Many expensive rims are forged or similar. Usually forged are more expensive and both strong and lighter in weight than gravity cast.

Stock MINI wheels are cast and heavy to allow for enough strength given their design. Light weight wheels may be damaged if you hit a pothole but so can heavy stock wheels- just hit a big and deep enough pothole going fast.

No matter which wheels always be careful where you drive and watch for road hazzards.

From the Outmotoring site:
Looks like $800 plus $118.35 UPS std shipping + GST +PST (and perhaps a broker charge; there is with FedEx ground +70)

"Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 wheel with the machined lip and gloss black finish and is only available in a 17"x7". Sold as a 45mm offset, 4x100 which is perfect for the MINI Cooper."

Nice wheels.

Since you live close to the border, have your new wheels shipped to an American parcel depot in Blaine. If you have them shipped into Canada the shipping/brokerage fees will me MUCH higher. If you do have them shipped into Canada, avoid UPS if possible. Their brokerage fees are very high.

Ship them to a northern US city with a MINI club. Then drive south and pick them up and leave your old wheels behind. Then drive across the border with new white rims.

expensive cast is better than cheap forged. it's not the method that matters, it's the quality of the product. Prodrive P1's are cast and are as bullet-proof a wheel as you'll find anywhere. Enkei uses MAT construction in many of their cast wheels.....very strong. BBS makes cast wheels and nobody reports cracked wheels. I don't recall seeing an Advan that was forged, but their method ensures a strong wheel.

just because two of your buddies cracked their cheap eBay cast wheels doesn't mean squat. the other thing to consider is mode of failure - cast wheels bend or crack. forged wheels shatter

Yeah, pretty much every Canadian knows this by now. There's even a class action lawsuit going on regarding the whole UPS brokerage thing...

I tell every US online store that ships with UPS that they are scam artists, some eBay sellers have even switched to USPS as a result (and USPS are generally faster than UPS at cross border shipments!

I use to work at UPS, and there are ways to get away with the tax + brokerage fees. I believe if you send them as a "gift" you can exempt from all the fees. I helped a guy send a $3,000 leather jacket once and the guy on the other end didn't have to pay any fees. I got a nice little tip for being a "miracle" worker. =]
