Tire mounting and balance question...
I'm looking to get new tires for my MCS (non runflat). My question is about the mounting and balance issue. I've been told by a couple of different people that I should still have the dealer do the mount and balance. Is this true? The reason behind this is because of 2 things:
1) they have the equipment to properly balance the tire ON the car. Does this matter?
2) because of the Tire pressure monitor, the dealer needs to do the mounting and balance so that the sensor in the wheel doesn't get messed up.
Is this true? I'm curious for opinions. Also, since I'm on a roll, does anyone know a good tire shop in the L.A. area (i'm in the Pasadena area)that will mount and balance for me? I'm going to get the tires from Tirerack and need a shop that will do it. Any help would be great because I need to do this soon and don't want to get reamed by the dealer to get this done. TIA.

There are no sensors in the wheels..the flat monitor works through ABS system by measuring rotational speed of tires. It is fine and best to balance the wheels off the car..I'm not sure it can be done on the car anyway..hope that helps
Lies....
The tire does NOT need to be balanced on the car... with today's modern dynamic balancers, they actually spin the wheel and rim to find the balance points verses the old bubble level method... I have NEVER had to resort to tires balanced on the car!
There is NO sensor in the wheel on your MINI.. the monitor system relies on a difference of rotation (diameter changes of a flat tire verses a full one) to compute when you have a flat tire...
Find a shop (like Discount Tire) that has modern equipment and sells aftermarket rims. This will ensure that they know how to properly mount your new tires and wheels without gouging or scratching you tires and rims...
I'm not associated with any tire shop but I have had ordered many sets of tires (street and race) over the years from TireRack (great service) and had them mounted at Discount Tire without any issues.

All the above is correct, no sensors are used, and any good dynamic balacer can do it! (definatly OFF the car) Installers!
