Coilover or not that is the question

Hey all, I have a MCS that I do not autocross, but I like the look of a lowered car. What is your input on just using lowering springs? Brands, prices? In my opinion, if I had the money for coilovers, I think I would start buying the parts needed for a new head. Thanks for any info.

if you want adjustable suspension... buy coilovers...

if you don't. Read up on linear vs. progressive rate springs. And figure out how much you want your car to drop and go from there.

good luck.

Would anyone recommend coilovers for someone who wants to be reasonably competitive in auto-x in a daily driven car?

tough call. Putting coil overs on an autoX car is going to put you in a class where your car may not be as competitive. So you have to pay attention to classing. Being an autoX'er you would benefit from the suspension adjustability, but will you actually take the time to find the settings that work for you, and is that worth $1000 in additional cost?

As far as street and light drivability you could prob do just as well with new springs, swaybar, and camber plates.

For a lowered street car I suggest Koni yellows and H & R springs. Coil overs will lower your car and let you dial in the exact ride height for a lot more money.

Are you guy's addressing me or Aeromax? Prime can you still use camber plates with only springs? Thought they were only used for coilovers? Super Coop, the Konis are they not adjustable? How much are these parts, give or take a few dollars? Like I said before I really don't think I need to go with full coilover's. Any info. will be appreciated .

JIMINNI -- I would strongly suggest just going with springs + dampers. Coilovers are a lot more money for just adjustability and other fringe benefits that aren't terribly important for a daily driver. You can use camber plates with springs. Take prime-drk's advice and search the forums for spring options. Most of them out there are progressive. I went with the h-sports (progressive) which drop about an inch. I'm happy with them, although it takes a little getting used to. The car feels a little light in transitions at speed.

Jim, next time you come by the shop you can look at the H-Sport, Eibach and M7s we have in stock. The H-Sports drop the least and the M7s the most.

The M7 springs will get him there since they drop between 1.75" and 2.25" depending on the MINI. We can also do the M7 coilovers if he gets crazy.

There are lots of things to take into consideration.

1) coil over rebuilds and longevity vs. costs
2) progressive rate vs linear springs as I said before.
3) cost of swaybar, springs, camber plates vs. coil overs and what extent you want with that setup

You can run camber plates with most springs. The biggest compatibility problems you will have is with trying to push more then -2.0 camber up front. My suggestion is you read up a bit and then call a vendor like srtech here or chad at dt or waylen of way motorworks.

Please don't forget about the importance of camber plates in whatever decision you make. I wouldn't pass them up as they make a big difference in how your car reacts when cornering.

for the record koni yellows are nice... but very stiff. They offer simplicity and longevity but I find the dampening a bit harsh. Of course the same could be said for a few of the coil overs ive gotten a ride in. I'd do a crapload of research befoer you jump in. It's one of those things where you prob wont find out what you want exactly until you find out what you don't want with money.

good luck and if i can help any more let me know.
