Suspension PSS9 Question
PSS9 Question
What hex head/socket/ratchet combo do you use to tighten the shock shaft nut to the tower plates. I can only get it so tight until the shaft starts to spin. And I have a popping noise now only backing down from the driveway.
I don’t have the PSS9s but the procedure is the same, the stock shaft nut is 21mm and I use a suspension socket 90-88-6-312-210 with a long 6mm allen to hold the shaft. Most other supplied strut top nuts (Koni, Leda, etc.) are 22 mm so you would need SW 1051-22mm. The MINI uses 21mm and 16mm respectively while the rest of the world uses 22mm and 17mm nuts. I don’t recommend using an impact wrench on the strut shaft unless a socket and allen combo won’t work. If you can’t hold the allen with hand strength, place the strut on its side and brace the allen with a block of wood while applying torque to the nut.
weld nut to socket
When I did my strut changeout, I welded a 5/8" nut to the top of a 22mm socket and then I could put a box wrench on the socket and put the allen through the top. It worked great. I actually made up a 16mm and a 21mm with the same setup and used them also during my change. They all worked better than using a air wrench and spinning the bolt

The advantage to an OEM cut-out style socket is the ability to use a torque wrench on the recessed front strut shaft nut. There’s always a work around for most situations, I’ve used a 13/16ths plug socket in a pinch, but I didn’t have a way to use the torque wrench and holding the short end of the allen was difficult. With the rear strut nut, an allen socket for the torque wrench and an open end for the nut; as long as the torque wrench is reverse capable.
