Thump clunk thump?? Help please

I'm going crazy. I have a clunking/thumping sound coming from the rear of the car at slow speeds on bumpy roads. I have been under the car four times and I can't find the problem.

First I thought I had a loose drop link. Not that!

Then I thought the exhaust was loose. No again!

Then I thought it might be my sway bar rubbing. shimmed that but it's still there!

Then I thought it must be a loose hatch. No!

I need help. Has anyone else experienced this sound.

similar issue on my 06 from day one, when pulling into my driveway i get a clunk noise on the right side rear, notice it more and more , when going down a curvy road i get it on both sides in the rear when I "upset" the suspension quick short left and right turns, going in for Driving light install tomorrow and hopefully it will get figured out. I only have 1900 miles so far and have llalready retorqued the wheels. we will see, I'll let you know what they say.

Maybe it could be dry Swaybar bushings.

I had similar noises and found that when I removed both rear wheels also the two rods that are attached to the holes in the bar and moved the bar up and down there was an almighty squeeking . so I then removed the bushing brackets and lubed the rubber bushings all over with brake caliper grease . Not sure if indeed this was the right stuff to use but it worked and has ever since.
I do hope this is your problem ,because its an inexspensive fix .

Any further details? I have some noise coming from the rear of my car as well, on the driver side... Sounds like creaking/squeaking... Any ideas what to look for/check? Thanks...

If its squeeking, its probably the sway bar.

Got one answer..... The 2 little ***** that pull the trunk cover up when you open the tailgate will swing far enough over to hit the plastic trim on the inside of the trunk. Basic physics.... still getting my clunk when pulling in the driveway though.

If its coming from the right rear it could possibly be a loose charcoal filter canister or gas tank leak test pump mounted above/behind the plastic wheel liner

rear tray hitting the rear window wiper motor housing

LongBoard,

This problem has been posted and discussed long, long ago. A common problem. Either the little ***** are bumping something, as has been suggested, or the rear tray is bumping on the rear window wiper motor housing.
An easy fix if that's the case.

Hope this helps,
John Petrich in Seattle

double check the sway bar

I had the same noise. Turned out my swaybar shifted off center. Instead of clearing the strut housing, it was hitting it dead on, preventing the car from lowering on that side. Check the housing for marks underneath the edge.

Oh, if your swaybar is centered, it can still hit. The quick fix is to rotate the housing a few degrees so that if it does hit anything, it will hit the rubber bushing up in there.

I checked that as well. Pulled the tray out and drove around and it was still thier.

Thank you though.

I just snapped my ALTA endlink. Heard a clunk only when backing out of my driveway the last couple of days. Will be calling the vendor to get a replacement or an upgrade.

I had a clunk from the bolts loosening on my swaybar bracket/bushing assembly. When installing the rear sway (again, after getting a new bracket/bushing/bolts), I used a bit of loc-tite.
