Six Hours to Install Shocks... Shocking!

I just purchased Koni FSDs. I asked my Mini dealer how much they would charge to put them on. I got the estimate of 6 hours at $97 an hour... total $582 ! I think I'll sweep off my garage floor and do them myself. I don't think I'll even let them do my oil changes. Makes me wonder about their competence when they think it will take 6 hours for the FSDs.

It's easy and won't take nearly that amount of time...

Even on the earlier cars where the driver side front takes some "coersion" to get off, it's well under a 6 hour job, even if you've never done it. Heck I installed a set of H-Sport springs without a spring compressor in less time than that! And I'm not the best wrench turner there is......

In general, I only use the dealer for warranty or recall work. No matter the brand of car.... If I can't do it myself, I find a good independant shop. They can't rely on all the people who (mistakenly) think that they're getting something extra for the high hourly rates and the factory training.... Personally, while I respect the mechanics at the dealerships, I don't like the pricing policies at the dealers....

That's awesome, Matt! So when I get my new H-sport springs, I can call you and we'll have an install party???

Sure!

Not all the techniques I used were that orthodox, but it's not a hard job....

Just for referance we have installed several sets of FSD shocks for 2.5 hours labor. Our rate is $ 90.00 P.H. for NAM or other MINI club members.

I put on FSDs recently and it took about 4 hours. That included pounding out a mushroom, dealing with both left wheels being fused to their hub rings, and putting on a STB. Definitely do it yourself if you have the tools and time.
