Suspension Wheels hitting springs
Wheels hitting springs
Just installed a few suspension components this weekend. We dropped the car off jack stands today to find a problem. The car is slammed but the front wheels still have clearance to fully turn. My problem is the springs on the KW's (V2's) are almost (maybe 2 to 4mm) touching the rubber.
Heres my setup. Variant 2's with Helix camber plates and 18x7.5 wheels running 215/35/18. My solution was going to be maybe 8mm spacers from Mini Madness and a nice alignment.
Anyone else run into this? Any general suggestion.

I ran into this same problem with KW V1 back in 02. I cant beleive they still have this issue. In any event what I did was to remove the short " keeper " springs and just left the main spring. Then with the space gained I was able to raise the adjustment collars high enough to clear the rubber . It was half assed I know but it did let me run them until I switched out to Leda's. I am too old school to feel comfortable with spacers but if you are just street driving then I guess they would be ok. IMHO they are a bozo No No for track or canyon . If you would like to give me a call in case my " fix " description isn't clear enough feel free. 818 497 4341

I had V1's and now KW's Competition 2 Ways, run the front perchs up to their full height, then check the tire to spring and spring perch clearance, if the tires don't clear you will need spacers. Get the minimum thickness that will do the job, I've seen 3mm and 5 mm out there. 5mm will still let the wheel rest on the hub but you will need longer bolts or studs with anything more than 2mm. You should have a MINIMUM of 7 full threads engaged on your bolts/studs and just changing wheels can affect this.
If the tires clear but the car is to high, remove the tender springs, as maxmini suggested, this makes a 19mm difference in height. It's my understanding newer V1's and V2's don't have tender's, though. In that case you will need new springs, straight not barrel shaped or tapered, or spacers. I can advise you on springs.
What is your wheel offset, that certainly could be the problem? Solution's are the same though, if you want to keep the wheels.

I have KW Race 2 way's installed and yes you'll have a rubbing problem. What wasn't stated was the wheel offset. A 45 offset rubs, a 38 or 40 does not. This was for 215/40/17 on 7 inch rims.
On the race tires and rims 235/40/17 8 inch rims 40 offset we had to make the same mod as above to clear the perch. Remove the tender springs and spacer between the springs. Raise the collar to clear the tire. This mode works if you want your MINI low. You'll end up with only about 1/2 inch of thread on the strut body to adjust the car higher if you need it..
