How does a sway bar work?

Being a novice, I found this quite interesting. So I thought perhaps others may be interested, too. Here is a description I found detailing sway bar operation.

Please forgive that it was posted to a VW forum

Nice info

at least it sounds good, as I'm a novice in that area as well.

Okay that was really excellent at explaining how sway bars work, the next question is if we want to add sway bars to our cars how do we choose what is the best set up, or is their a best set up

yeh, there's only a "best" setup for your application, never in general.

Kenchan, my thoughts exactly!

I would say stay away from anything too radical and then experiment a lot with adjustments; swaybar settings, geometry, damping etc.

That's odd advise. Why say you?

I agree, that swaybars should be used to FINE tune the set-up and here they can be extremely beneficial. And by fine tune I mean that springs and dampers, in that order, should be selected first for a single purpose; road or track. I would agree that under some circumstances one might be able to do without a front bar on a front wheel drive car or a rear bar on a rear drive car. My final set up with my 1981 Ford Fiesta had no front bar.

I can understand your comment from a narrower perspective, but wieght transfer is aided by sway bars too...with little other ill affects if approached properly; too much bar/roll stiffness can be bad. However, roll stiffness distribution is can be fined tuned with swaybars without adding to damping or springs rates; too much stiffness here is bad too.
