$500 Swarbar Install?!?!?!?!?

That's what I was told at Tuner Motorsports last week... It's a 6 hr job, and will run about $500 to do it. Also stressed this was not a do-it-yourself job...

This is JUST the rear bar we're talking about. Why does this sound like highway robbery to me?

That is highway robbery! it's just a sway bar, man. ask around for other prices and you may be pleasantly surprised.

I hate to hear that Turner actually said that it was NOT a do it yourself job and it would take them 6hrs to do! I have a good amount of respect for Turner and am quite disapointed to hear them talking like some back yard garrage! Shame on them!

For a well equiped shop like Turner, it might take them 90 minutes at most to do the job. I could do it in 40 if I had use of there shop.

Are you sure you understood them correctly? Who did you talk with? I feel like calling them myself and asking what's up with that!

maybe they were quoting for th efront and rear bar? $500 is a bit much for just a rear bar. And turner is very fair in their pricing and shipping fees so I cant see them gouging that bad for a more/less simple ( but pain in the but ) install.

I did mine on the flor of my garage, very doable but a pain without a lift to get the car high enough.

That is truly outrageous!

Hopefully there was a misunderstanding somewhere that caused them to quote a very inflated labor price!

For that kind of money, they should at least refill your blinker and headlight fluids for free!

A competent and fair mechanic should be able to do this job in less than an hour (Randy Webb's How-to says it might take 2 hours for a first time novice)

I confess I have not installed an upgraded sway bar on my MINI, but I installed one in my GTI in about 45 minutes and removed one from my land rover in about 3 minutes.

From looking at pictures of sway bars for the MINI, it appears that there are no more than 6 bolts holding it on. Any mechanic that takes an hour to loosen and replace a single bolt has definitely got a screw loose!

Thanks all, I thought that was outrageous.

I dont' know who I was talking to, but specified the H&R 19mm rear sway-bar. Asked what the installtion cost was. and that when I got the 6hrs claim.

Needless to say I passed and walked out.

On the bright side, it is nice to see the M1 and E30 M3 in the showroom.

Was the black McLarin F1 still there? It's under a car cover in the showroom. Was the first time I have seen one in person. Man, that engine compartment is just amazing!

Maybe the $500 includes the use of that McLaren F1 for the 6 hours it takes to install your sway bar? If so, then I think the $500 price is very reasonable and fair!

Aaron,
You should contact Randy Webb and see if he can do one for you this weekend at the Pulley party in Providence RI.
Check it out here. http://www.webbmotorsports.com/forum...opic.php?t=597

Rear bar is only 1.5 to 2 hour install. We get $85 / hour. Maybe you were quoted for labor and the parts? Maybe they quoted you for the front bar installation as well? Either way, there was obviously a misunderstanding or miscommunication. Before posting in the future, if you're not 100% sure on the information you have, just give us a call so we can clear it up for you. That way you don't post bad info on a public forum again. Thanks for the reply Doug. It sounded like a mis-understanding to me. That's a good reminder to us all. Double check your info before posting. No need to make a big deal out of something that can be corrected by a phone call or a visit.

It was, I just spoke to Kevin, the Service Manager about this. He would not have quoted anyone $500 to install just a rear bar. Not on purpose at least. Whatever happened, the wrong information got out or the information was received incorrectly.

Thanks,

Doug

Update: After asking around, I've found out that you spoke to Drew in the showroom last week. He quoted you for both front and rear. The front, as most of you know is a much bigger job. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Doug, thanks for the responce! Like I said, unfortuneatly I don't know who I spoke to, but was rather shocked by the price and time involved, even repeated it back to his confirmation.

Figuring 2 hrs labor plus the parts its no more than $350 .. (a number that sounds much better to me) Glad it was a misunderstanding, and will be giving a call when I get sometime to get over there!

Onasled: Yup the McLaren was still covered... Hibernating until the street-sweepers do their job i guess.

If you're looking to save some cash and like tinkering with things then do it yourself. I did mine and though it did take a while I did get it done. If I did it again I can do it under 2 hours, probably a little over 1 hour if I'm lucky. It took me so long the first time because I spent so much time finding the right parts to remove and the time I spent getting the bar out. This was on a MCSC, which I posted a little info on Randy's How-To.

I agree with Doug. Miscommunication. Normally the rear bar install is 90 minutes. Your quote was in error. Sorry for the shock you got. The front bar takes alot longer to replace- don't do it.

For a front and rear bar with parts that is a pretty good deal. The front bar is a real PITA job. I have a front and rear bar with my PSS9s and like the set up. (Depends on your shocks and springs)

$500 for front and rear seems fair to me.

I think it inappropriate for any of us to ***** in public and come close to defaming a vendor when you don't know your facts. Seems to me the guy who started this thread owes Turner an apology for not getting clarification from them in the first place before spouting off here.

My 2 cents

The local shop out here, Steve's Auto Clinis does the rear bar for 90$ and the front for $ 150. He also throws in a 4 wheel alignment for those prices.
