JCW Suspension Kit

Well slap my *** and call me Sally. I bought my JCW R58 Coupe and assumed I was buying a car with the JCW suspension. Boy am I stupid, right? Is there any advantage to buying and having the JCW kit installed over an after market set? I am under the impression that I can do better price wise as well as performance wise going after market. Am I tracking right? The local performance shop suggested an H&R kit with coil overs and springs. I would also like to lower the car 1-1.5" and this kit should do the trick.

Many aftermarket coil-over kits will provide better traction and more adjust-ability then OEM JCW kit, but usually at the expense of a harsher ride. Price points range from below $1K for low-end c/o's, to north of $2+K for fully adjustable top of the line kits.

I had the JCW suspension installed on my 2009 JCW Hatch, and loved it.

For a daily driver with no track aspirations I felt it was a great balance of comfort and performance. Not harsh, but the car always felt solid. Much better than the S with Sort suspension that it replaced.

I also liked the fact that the car was a "pure" factory JCW in all aspects. I realize that might not matter to a lot of folks, but I liked it. :-)

Disclaimer: I'm not a suspension expert by any means - this is just my very-subjective opinion!

I have the stock suspension and feels a bit soft when WOT on some bumpy on-ramps. If you're interested in performance while keeping things comfortable you might consider the Road & Track Ohlins coilover system, it's pricey though. There's a thread of it's own below.

I bought the JCW Sport Suspension and swapped from a stock S suspension to it. Wow! What a difference! One of the best changes I have ever made to the car.

What are the major differences you have noticed since the switch?

How much are you getting the full JCW factory suspension for? You'll definitely get more adjustment out of an aftermarket suspension setup. Especially when it comes to things like ride heights.

I've heard complaints of the JCW suspension being kind of stiff. I've driven a car with it but only in an auto-x setting. An aftermarket suspension with a properly valved shock and matched spring will be a pretty comfy ride. The Ohlins would be an excellent choice and I've heard many good things about them.

Rode in R56 and R53 with it and it was very nice. Have not in the R58 JCW w/JCW tuning suspension but betting its very nice.

What is the Duel Valving feature I hear about in regards to the Ohlins R&T? I've been trying to find a review I once read in a magazine when the Ohlins R&T were installed on a BMW.
