Cutting Bump Stops

Hey guys,

I just ordered a set of NM springs and I'll be using them with the OEM shocks till I can get my hands on a set of Bilsteins. For now the NM springs paired with a 19 mm rear sway will suffice.

The question I have before I start with any install is cutting the bump stops. I have a quite knowledgeable friend that highly suggests NOT cutting bump stops but rather finding a set of bump stops that are smaller yet still fit the setup. Now I don't have much experience in this category so I'm unsure of any other bump stop that would be acceptable.

What have you guys done in terms of cutting the bump stop etc to aid in the amount of travel that our cars apparently lack so greatly.

I'd like to hear your guys opinions. I trust my buddy, but at the same time I'd like to get other people's suggestions regarding this matter.

Much appreciated.

Bennyboy

We sell alot of the NM springs and you'll be happy to know there is some great instructions that come with them showing you how to cut the bumpstops. So don't worry when you get em you'll see the pics are great.

isn't the general rule that bumpstops should be 1/3rd the spring rate you're using?

It's been a while Benny but if you need those NM instructions I can scan and send them to you. PM me if you need them.

The foam used in our bumpstops appears to be closed cell, so if you cut them it will not have any more tendency to soak up moisture and degrade than if you didn't cut them. At the stock ride height you are already on the bumpstops, which gives the stock setup that rubbery feel. NM trims them so the first bit of travel is not in contact with the bumpstops like before. This smooths out minor road irregularities much better than stock even though it is a little lower. Having experienced this change, I would be tempted to cut them with the stock set up but I bet that would increase the pitching back and forth on hard braking and acceleration. It would probably give you a bilstien-like ride though and get rid of that rubber bullet ricochet feel. Now who will be the guinea pig?

I was planning on cutting the bumpstops on my stock springed R53, but I got some springs before I got a chance.

Just installed the springs today. So far so good. I actually do feel a major increase in performance, although I can tell theres more to do.

I have the 19 mm Eibach sway ready to be installed. Anyone know of any install instructions for the rear sway? Upon inspection, looks like the rear subframe has to be dropped.. Looks like a pain.

I suggest just removing one side of the subframe and loosening the other... Realigning after removing both sides is a pain... NM has a good set of install directions in a PDF file on their website... Should help well enough.

Got the sway in today no prob, thanks for the help guys.

Also, i'd like to mention that the car drives AMAZING after the NM springs and rear sway. I thought that even after all that, I knew it would ride a lot better, but I had no idea that I would put off the idea of replacing the shocks. I think I'll just have to wait for the OEM ones to wear out before i decide to upgrade. The car handles soo well now as it stays planted in the corners and it doesnt hop over bumps anymore.

To anyone that is considering a set of springs, I honestly feel that the rear sway is the most beneficial mod for handling dollar for dollar.

I can attest to that as I did mine last year. Thank god for the rubber mallet!

Benny, just curious, did your shop have any issues aligning the rear with the stock control arms after lowering and installing the new sway bar and what setting did you go with on the sway bar?

I'm also going back and forth about whether to wear out the stock shocks first before forking over the cash for Konis...

I usually do all the mods with a friend of mine, but in this case I'm just far to busy with work to have the time to do so. My friend had no issues getting the rear bar in, actually knocked it out in about an hour. He had no mention with the stock control arms after the new parts came in. I didn't specify which setting to set the sway on.. thus he set it to stiff. Eibach only has 2 settings.
