Suspension Vorshlag/AST coilover install (with Pics)
Vorshlag/AST coilover install (with Pics)
Finally Got around to Installing them. These are hands down the most beautiful set of coilovers I've seen to date. On the other race cars we've been using Moton Motorsports shocks but after talking with the guys at Vorshlag I decided to give their stuff a try and I've got VERY high expectations for the AST's. These are the new 5100's and they are inverted. The rears are aluminum housings. Install went fairly easy. We're pulling off OEM shocks with JCW springs and Eibach camber plates. Weights are as follows Went with a 450 front spring and 600 rear. I'll probably be changing the rates quite a bit in the near future.
OEM/JCW/Eibach Front = 14.6 lbs
Vorshlag/AST Front = 13.0 lbs
so 1.6 lbs less weight + the shocks are inverted so less unsprung weight
OEM/JCW Rear = 9.8 lbs
Vorshlag/AST Rear = 10 lbs
This surprised me due to the rear being an aluminum housing.
Unfortunatly didn't get to drive em as here in florida we've got 18 inches of rain in the last 5 days. Everything is flooded. So the install pics show the surface rust and general muck on the car.
Enjoy the pictures... (all pictures on the car were taken while it was in the air.. hence the huge wheel gap)

Looks like you still need to get these squared away? In looking at your picks I'm seeing some bad adjustments. Maybe al the pics are not the final setup, but if they are then beware.
You going to corner balance? Also, with these rates, you need to be VERY conscious of your sway bar settings.
Really looks nice. I like this system quite a lot, though maybe a touch pricey for single knobbers.

Wow. those coils look great man. I love ast, after driving gnatsters car, they made a world of difference for me. Looks like a great setup and cant wait to hear your thoughts.
If you dont mind me asking, what was the price

Oh, believe me those ride heights you see are not final. Just where they were when I took the pictures before I put it on the ground. They are $2699
http://www.vorshlag.com/product_info...roducts_id=303 Well worth it for a top quality shock.

If that price is including the springs, helpers, camber plates, and top mounts for the rear then I think it may be one of the best deals going in that price range.

I like the fact that the adjustment ***** are at the bottom of the unit. It seems like the most accessible location--especially on the rears.
The worrier in me wonders if there's a tradeoff to that feature...?

Haven't got her alighned and I've been quite busy trying to sort out everything else on the car. I can tell you this much. These shocks are amazing. The ride quality is stiffer but a better ride then the JCW/OEM's we just pulled off. I'm quite surprised given the much higher spring rates. I'll wait till after she gets alighned but I have a feeling I'll be going higher in the rear spring rate.
Hopefully take it to homestead this weekend. Quite busy at work to try to get away to go get it alighned and corner weighted. Also need to get it on the dyno and get the Revolution tune in it. This weekend is looking kinda iffy time wise.
The old Camber plates are forsale. As far as the old shocks and JCW springs. I haven't decided on the springs. We might be building a car to go run SSB in which case we'll need the springs.

$2699 for the 5000's (like these)
$1910 for the 4000's

I was considering these until I added all of the $ up and will be going with TSW's KW setup instead. In the end, I'm not serious enough about track driving (yet) to justify that expense.
It's 2600 + 340 (plates) + 200 (rear mounts) + 240 (springs) + 200 (tender springs) to = 3600.
Now, I don't know if one needs all of that stuff (I would have bought it all, I think), but if you don't then the original price of 2600 looks great.
This probably falls into the "you get what you pay for" category; I'm sure this setup will serve customers very very well

No track report coming this weekend. Despite our best efforts and Jan getting up at the crack of dawn to help Tune the car we damaged a rear control arm on the dyno this morning and she won't get aligned. I'm bummed but at the same time this weekend was feeling awfully rushed. I'll report back after sebring in a couple weeks.
Finally got her on sebring. It was blazingly hot so I didn't get to many laps. The car started out a bit of a mess but I was able to make some changes to get her pretty close. I was amazed at how good the turn in was. Grip over the bumps was impressive despite the rather greese track from the heat. Turn in was Incredible. The car just jumped into the corner. I've gotta play with the alignment a bit (which I'll do this week , back to sebring next weekend). The interesting thing was how much one click of adjustment did to the handling on the rebound adjustment. I'm not used to one click making such a large difference. It was quite nice. As a Note the car went 5 seconds quicker a lap then the last visit (JCW's and Camber plates, pulley). But it's also making a few more ponies now too.
I find that a lot more ponies is neccessary if you want to make big changes in time - there's not a real difference between an S or a JCW at Lime rock for example. So, I would guess that your setup is key here...and you'll probably get faster. Nice.
