DIY Spring Install? How Tough?

Hey Guys,

I'm considering trying to do a spring install myself...well, with a buddy.

I know that I'll have to take the car somewhere for an alignment afterwards, but how tough of a job is this? Anyone know of any write-up's?

I did a search and found a ton of info on springs, but not sepcifically on the installation of them.

BTW, I have an 08 MCS and I'm looking at Eibach's...once they become available (backordered, from what I read).

Thanks in advance!

If you haven't done springs yourself before, don't try it now, unless your helper has done it. Just looking at the oem springs and trying to copy it can be a problem. You gotta tighten stuff down to specs or they'll bounce and bang. Try the suspension forum for info.

I put the H&R springs on mine and it was easy! ask adam from alta, or just go here...

excellent read and perfect directions. FOLLOW ALL THE STEPS!!! The step where you mark the spring perches for the rears is VERY important.

I've replaced springs & struts on a 76 porsche 914, so i guess anything is easy by comparison. The fronts are SUPER easy. just make sure you have the right tools for the job and you'll be fine!

I'm also pretty sure you will also need special tools besides a torque wrench.... Like a spring compressor.

if you read the article, you put your right foot on the spring, point it towards a box, and run the bolt off with an impact wrench. That's what I did.

I did mine on both my '03 R50 and my '88 325is, and both were fairly easy. Backs were a piece of cake the fronts took me a little longer but overall id say 2 hours with 20* temps in a unheated garage...

Thanks guys! I have a helper who has put springs on other cars before. He has a spring compressor and an impact wrench.

Thanks again for the info!

Very daring... I guess I'm of the crowd the right tool for the right job. I won't even use a screwdriver handle to tap in a nail.

I did my springs on my old car w/o previous experience. Look for a write up about changing the springs on the R50/R53 and you will get a good idea of what is involved. If you have a spring compressor, torque wrench, impact wrench, and time, I can't see you have too much trouble.

you can rent a spring compressor. the impact gun will make things so much easier. I did the install without prior experience and it wasnt hard, it was just time consuming since i had no power tools of any sort. if you look around, the torque specs are floating around on here but i forgot what they are... sorry.
