Klunk Klunk

Ah yes, the dreaded klunking.

I recently installed a new Koni/HSport Setup on my MINIs and now about 400 mile later im starting to get a klunking sound. It feels like its mostly the drivers front, but may be passenger side as well, but i cant exactly hear it as well.

The noise sounds kind of like a hollow klunking and mainly is heard when the car is at lower speeds and going over small bumps. Sounds like theres a "shake" somewhere because i hit something and it gives off a couple quick thuds.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

make sure the top nut is torqued down all the way because i had the same deal and it came down to turning the speed up on my air wrench to get it on fast with out the piston shaft spinning.

I actually had the nuts come off of the rears and had to get new ones. Made a similar sound over bumps.

I'm getting something that sounds ike this, but it was after I had the Alta PSRS fitted

It wasn't the top nuts tried that, but not had chance to try anything else.

Good to Hear and if you got them really good I don't think it will be back unless the nuts some how come loose.

I had this intially for the 1st week.

-1) Sprayed some WD-40 down the top hole down through the top camber plates
-2) Made sure the springs were not rubbing on the inner wheel wheel w/ my -2 Deg Camber...they were...sprayed with liquid lithum grease until could pound the wheel wells in more at a later date (still havent done it)
-3) Of course if the top nut is loose..then ya..that would make noise.

Very quiet for over 2 months now

The other possibilitys clunk is either your factory strut bearing could be shot or if you have aftermarket camber plates the strut bearing or pillow ball bearings could be shot also. Also if your MINI has high miles you front control arm bushings are more then like likey totally shot.

Also make sure that your swaybar endlinks have been fully tightened after you re-installed the springs. It's easy to not tighten them enough and then you get that hollow clunk noise you're talking about.

Could this also happen in the rear? The top nut not being tightened all the way down?

YES. I had both nuts come completely off my rears. I think I must have drove at least 2000 miles like that. Don't think it did any damage. But the struts and springs would drop every time I hit a bump. If you jack up the rear and pull/push on the struts they should wiggle if anything is loose. You could also just pull them out and tighten them up in mot much more time.

So is there anything else that would cause a clunking sound in the rear when hitting a bump? For instance, my Alta sway bar needing some grease? My Ireland control arms needing some grease? Have stock rear end links on a lowered (rather extremely lowered) car?
