I noticed some small strips of plastic attatched to the underside of the car and am not sure of the reason. There are 5 of them. Two I could understand maybe some type of protection from road debris for the gas tank but there are two in front of the rear tires also. Plus one in the center just behind the engine. Are these for protection? I'm just curious.
i always thought they might be under car mud flaps. Saabs have had these under their cars for years especially on the old live axle rear ends of the old 900 series.
These have been given the highly original name of 'airflaps' by MINI. They are there to break up airflow under the car at speed. Otherwise at constant speed a booming noise would be heard inside the car. They also serve as a way to reduce drag and buffeting to a degree.
This is according to information posted on mini2.com by a tech working in the MINI factory.
