Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, press the brake once or twice and wait about ten minutes. When you reconnect the terminal you will have a reset ECU module. That worked for me.Turned out it was an emissions issue when I hooked the code reader up.Its worth a shot you'll just have to reset your clock and the odo will be zero.

Keep in mind that if you DO have a gas cap problem, it will take a little time for the CEL to go off. I've heard everything up to another tank of gas.

Ok. Heres the deal with my car. All it needed was reprogramming and that solved the issue.

BTW for people who are interested in servicing at Mini of towson - The guys who argued about weekend service - both are right
1) Service is not open on Saturday BUT the service managers are present on saturdays. For pick up and drop off and making appointments.
2) Starting April 5th they are going to start servicing cars too from 9am - 4pm Saturdays.

so does everyone's CEL issue been dealt with and Ok now?

my Clubman, MC/Auto threw an CEL at 10 miles lasted for a day or so, went out for 2 days and was back at around 220 miles.

dealer took it and replaced the Exhaust Vanos Solenoid and seems ok now.
reading this thread has me a bit worried, but I did not see any bad followups during the past months.

I owned my MINI for all of 13 days before I had to get towed back to the dealer due to the CEL and sputtering. They called today to say it was a bad spark plug.

I'm not at all pleased about having to get towed back to the dealer before two weeks passed. This car better not make another peep for at least fifty or sixty thousand miles.

I had this problem with my 2008 MCCS, the engine light came on at 1,500 miles. The indicator was an engine symbol cross hashed with yellow. I saw in the owners manual that I could drive it, but with limited speed.
I had it towed to Annapolis Mini, and it took several days to determine the cause. Initially, they "said" they could not duplicate the problem .. even though the light was on!
BMW wanted them to flash the computer and return to "customer" me! The SA wasn't going to do that they kept the car 5 days with same issue - engine light - they finally determined that it was the High Pressure Fuel Pump. Since I got the car back (took 7 days), I haven't had any issues. The SA states that there were 2 other Minis in for service just after mine went in with the same problem. Evidently BMW knows the fix!

Just want to report our mini cooper doing this also. It's a 2007 with 65k on it. Been to the dealer twice for this. It runs really rough, sputters on acceleration and at idle, and dies after long trips. The blinking ses came on the other day with the warning that damage to the cat could occur.

Also the intake air box and tube seems to be kinda wobbling around in there. Is it supposed to be loose?

Should I start my own thread for these problems or keep them in this one? I'd like to get a list of things to go over. So far I'm thinking:
1. MAF
2. Replace fuel cap
3. O2 sensor maybe? (although the thread says that's not normally it?)

Three other things to check--have the plugs been replaced (supposed to be done every 60,000 miles)? Also, have the coils been checked? HPFP? I had a similar situation on my '07 MCS at 70,000 miles. I was sure it was the fuel pump, because so many other reports have been coming up, but a little dealer diagnostics revealed the plugs were bad as well as the #2 coil. Hubby replaced both, total was about $250, INCLUDING dealer diagnostics.

That was 77,000 and 2 long trips ago, and haven't had a miss since (knocking on wood here).
