Knocking noise coming from... the dash?!

EDIT: Turns out it was a motor mount issue. No biggie!

Over the past couple months, a strange knocking noise has been developing deep within the dash of my 06 MCS. It sounds like it's behind the airbag on the passenger side, as far back as the firewall. It "thumps" to the rhythm of the motor, but also makes noise going over bumps, etc. If I start to let the clutch out without giving any gas it makes the noise more pronounced.

I'm taking my car in for its first service on Saturday. If I mention it can they do anything as a part of the service? Has anyone ever had this problem? It's driving me nuts

Sounds like you have a garden gnome trapped up in there... it's been known to happen. Gnomes are attracted to "cute yet powerful things", as any folklore major will attest. Better leave a peice of bread and an imported beer in the passenger-side foot well, or it may starve to death.

...

Seriously, that is NOT a normal noise, so I'd definitely mention it to the dealer when you bring it in for service.

Good luck, and tell us what it really ended up being.

Busted motor mount?

I used to have a knocking noise in my MINI...however, it was more coming from the engine bay. It was due to a bad motor mount which was replaced under warranty.

Yeah mate, had pretty much the same noise. You probably need a new motor mount under warranty. Easy fix for them. Pop your hood and look at the motor mount. If it is broked there will probably be a good bit of dirty black oil under and around it

Wow! Sounds like a motor mount issue. I'll check it out tomorrow and see if I can find anything.

Thanks!

I suppose this is possible as well.

I'll leave him/her some treats over night. If they're gone tomorrow, we'll know what the problem is!

Damn gnomes.

EDIT: VVVVV I guess you could say I've got gnomore patience for this noise VVVVV

It'd be nice to have one "Garden" your car.

UPDATE:

So, the SA says I need a new flywheel. They gave me a 325i to drive until it's fixed, so I can't complain!

Just as I thought, the problem was not fixed. They assumed when I said "noise coming from passenger side," I meant "noise coming from the driver side," which is the chattery flywheel. They fixed that by replacing the flywheel and clutch. They did not fix the problem I originally reported! Sigh... even after they called me and said "you need a new flywheel," I said "are you sure? I know that noise. This is a different one."

What do I do now?

P.S. The new clutch feels very mushy! Not as stiff as the original. Is this normal?
