Chrome mirror caps question...

Just ordered a 07 cooper S with chrome mirror caps ($140) but am thinking I should have added them afterwards so that I'd have a choice between black (roof color) or chrome. Do the factory installed mirror caps cover a factory pained finish, or just unfinished plastic?
