Oil in Intercooler Normal?

I have taken my intercooler off twice now (once to install boost gauge, and the other time to fix the boost gauge ) And each time i have noticed a little bit of oil lying around just before the clamps. Is this normal? If not, what can be done to fix this?

Any help is useful!

Yes, it's normal. You can install an OCC (Oil Catch Can) to address this issue. Do a search on OCC for many threads on the subject.

Lots of members here have the oil catch can to keep the oil out of the intercooler. There was a thread a while ago that debated whether or not oil in the intercooler was a very bad thing or not, and no answer was ever agreed upon.

Or even remove the intercooler twice a year and run some brake cleaner through it.

Just clean it once in a while. Better practice IMO. I figure I'll do main every 25k. The first time I cleaned my TDIs intercooler (at about 90,000) I drained about a pint of oil from it. The VW desing traps the oil in the return hose.

How-do,

Did a little research (I'm still a MINI noob) and found the following thread. It helped to answer a few of my own questions.

search the 16.00 dollar catch can . yeah you can clean it periodically but why burn oil if you don't have to . let's keep our cylinders clean out there.
